Max Cotton was a young man from Swansea, Tasmania, who volunteered for the RAAF in 1939 and trained in Australia, Canada and the UK before going to fly twin-engine Westland Whirlwinds with 263 Squadron RAF. These were armed with four 20mm cannon in the nose and were used as fighter bombers on targets in France and on anti-shipping strikes in the waters off the French coast. Max took part in the day and night operations of the squadron, engaged FW190 fighters, dive-bombed airfields and flew against ships. To hit the ships required flying right at them at very low level, into the anti-aircraft defences on the ships and on shore, and release the bombs when the pilot judged the right split-second had arrived. Max was never a fighter ace, but represents the thousands of men who volunteered and flew to the best of their ability what they were told to fly, when and where. This is the flying career of one of the thousands of volunteers for war service with the RAAF 1939-45.

Sobering and interesting.

Always loved the look of the Whirlwind and literature about it is sparse so this is most welcome! So, I must so, is a pilots story where he isn't an ace but just a young man doing a job of work, far from home; well done, Max Cotton and Lex MacAuley!
