About the Author
Jeff Miner is the pastor of LifeJourney Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was raised in fundamentalist independent Baptist churches, and received his undergraduate degree from Bob Jones University.

In college, Jeff felt called to the ministry, but deferred that calling while trying to come to terms with being gay. In the meantime, he attended Harvard Law School, graduating with honors in 1983. Several years later, after intensive study of the Bible and homosexuality, Jeff came to peace with being gay. Soon he discovered the Metropolitan Community Churches, a Christian denomination that has arisen out of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. There, Jeff realized he could fulfill his call to ministry. He completed his clergy training and was ordained in 1997.

Before his ordination, Jeff worked as an attorney for 13 years, last serving as a Deputy Chief Council for a federal banking agency.

Jeff lives with his spouse, David Zier. They were joined in Holy Union on September 8, 1990.

John Tyler Connoley is the son of Wesleyan missionaries. He spent most of his childhood years in Zambia, Africa, and has lived in Korea, the Philippines, and all of the West Coast states.

He came out to himself in 1991, while attending Indiana Wesleyan University, and has since sought to live a life that integrates his deep faith in God with his sexuality. While working on this book, Tyler completed his M.A. in Biblical Studies at Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Indiana.

He is married to Rob Connoley.

A good reexamination of the biblical texts on homosexuality

This book argues convincingly that the Bible does not condemn committed same-sex partnerships. This means that if you don't like the argument, you have to go back to the Bible and explain why your reading is better than Miner and Connoley's reading. It also means that if you like their conclusion, you still have to go back and figure out whether the argument was persuasive.

They make the argument in three ways.

First, they argue that the biblical passages used to "clobber" gays have been misread. This misreading is most convincing for Lot and Sodom, where the anti-gay interpretation is clearly twisted. The authors' argument is more debatable for Leviticus, Romans, and 1 Corinthians. If you read the Bible in historical context, you'll probably be convinced; if you like to memorize passages in isolation, you won't be persuaded.

Second, they argue that gays and lesbians can be found in the Bible and receive sympathetic treatment. I loved this part of the book, though parts are pretty speculative. David and Jonathan was the most convincing, Ruth and Naomi the weakest. However, Christians should be most interested in the New Testament and not the Old. This makes the account of Cornelius, a Roman centurion, and his slave (whom Peter healed) particularly interesting.

Third, the authors move beyond close readings of the biblical text to argue that Jesus's central message affirms gay and lesbian partnerships. I was pleasantly surprised to see this chapter in a book by two admittedly conservative Christians. It's good to remember that Jesus rejected the narrow legalisms of the Judaism of his time. This is why I've never understood why anti-gay readings of the Bible rely so much on the rules in Leviticus, which they don't pretend to follow in their own lives.

In short, this book makes a good but not flawless argument that the Bible does not condemn committed same-sex couples. Read it with an open mind and heart, go back to the Bible, and see what God tells you.

Different from the other books

Many books have argued that the Bible does not condemn same-sex relationships. In the vast majority of cases, however, the arguments sound like loopholes and excuses, not a sincere reading of Holy Scripture. (Sadly, this includes even the ever-popular "What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality.")
This book is remarkably different! The authors don't make excuses or water down the text; instead, they take the Bible seriously and treat it respectfully, allowing the Bible itself to provide the best evidence for their case. Meanwhile, this book is so short, simple, and easy to read that anyone can benefit from it.
"The Children Are Free" is chock full of anecdotes and examples, making it a delight to read, even for people who don't normally read about the Bible. Those of us more familiar with the subject will appreciate the clarity of the authors' argument.
Other, similar books made me think, "Yeah, I guess I can see that," but this one left me wondering, "How could you come to any other conclusion?"

Encouraging, sound review of Scripture

This book was a Godsend for me. I grew up in a faith that was very condemning of the feelings I quite naturally experienced. As a result, I was very unhappy for years, even marrying and divorcing as a result. After my divorce, while searching for guidance, I happened upon this book and found the answers I had sought for so many years. The authors make a logical, reasoned argument for their affirming position that addresses common points of contention for people of faith. My only complaint is the somewhat hoky writing style that seems to be a way of making the book as casual and conversational as possible. However, this is a vast improvement over the other books that I have read, which are so steeped in intellectual dissection and examination that they confused me and left me with no "ammo" for later discussions. This book lays out understandable evaluations of Scripture that are easy to understand and even easy to recall during later discussions. Thank God for this book! It said all the things I knew but couldn't articulate.

The twelve contributors discuss the presence of ancient Greek poetry, philosophy, and science (astrology, cosmography, geography) in Dante’s writings, as well as the Greek characters who populate his works. Some of these individuals were drawn indirectly from ancient mythography, Homeric epic, and other such sources, while others were historically attested personages, down to Dante’s own era. Greek was not only a language and civilization of the past, but also a present (and often rival) religious and political entity. To each layer―ancient pagan, early Christian, and contemporary Byzantine―Latins related differently. Doctrinal, political, linguistic, cultural, and educational matters all played important roles in shaping the attitudes that form the focal point for this volume, which sets the stage for further engagement with Dante’s corpus in its cultural settings.

Though this blistering book identifies many causes of the recent financial crisis, from housing policy to minimum capital requirements for banks, the authors lay ultimate blame on a dominant deregulatory ideology and Wall Street's corresponding political influence. Johnson, professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management, and Kwak, a former consultant for McKinsey, follow American finance's rocky road from the debate between Jefferson and Hamilton over the first Bank of the United States through frequent friction between Big Finance and democracy to the Obama administration's responses to the crises. The authors take a highly critical stance toward recent palliative measures, arguing that nationalization of the banks would have been preferable to the bailouts, which have allowed the banks to further consolidate power and resources. Given the swelling size of the six megabanks, the authors make a persuasive case that the financial system cannot be secure until those banks that are too big to fail are somehow broken up. A radical, but necessary proposal for revamping the banking and financial systems

The desire to analyze the current economic downturn has prompted a deluge of books, most focusing on how to address present and future economic ills and some narrowly focused on individual players and institutions that played a key role in the financial collapse, while others explained the events that led us to this place. "13 Bankers" explains how we got here and more importantly comes up with ideas to prevent a recurrence in the future far more concisely than many others I've read. I could be easy to dismiss Johnson and Kwak's observations as being pessimistic, as makes a very damning indictment of the banking and financial sectors in their past and present conditions and a rather trenchant argument that if these problem are not addressed we likely face another imminent meltdown. The authors give readers a quick concise history of finance and banking in the United States, something that many Americans are woefully unaware of, that points out how banks and financial institutions came to garner so much power over the economy. While efforts have been made to regulate them to varying degrees those regulations have often proven ineffective or are too often enacted AFTER financial catastrophes, much our current situation. The authors rather persuasively argue that the "too big to fail" model and the bailouts of 2008 and 2009 were misguided, arguing that nationalization would have been the better route to go. They continue the argument that the forced mergers, such as Merrill Lynch and Bank of America, were mistakes and instead had created institutions that are now truly to big to fail. In some respects it almost sounds like a Teddy Roosevelt-era trust buster and his argument that these large institutions need to be broken up to diffuse their power certainly makes sense. They also point out the corrosive effect their political clout and donations carry with the political process, hindering further efforts at regulation.

Ultimately "13 Bankers is far more satisfying a read than some recent books on the subject such as The Road from Ruin: How to Revive Capitalism and Put America Back on Top, On the Brink: Inside the Race to Stop the Collapse of the Global Financial System, Rediscovering Values: On Wall Street, Main Street, and Your Street, and America, Welcome to the Poorhouse: What You Must Do to Protect Your Financial Future and the Reform We Need. Yet the sad truth is that while the authors make a compelling argument for change the political establishment in Washington lacks the political will to break up these excessively large institutions. It wouldn't be good for THEIR business, which is getting reelected. While there are efforts afoot in Washington at reform none are as radical a surgery as proposed here, but suffice to say when the next financial catastrophe comes, and the authors argue it IS coming, there is unlikely to be any taxpayer/voter support for ANY bailout in ANY form. If anything "13 Bankers" made me mad as hell and against any future bailout, let alone continuing the current ones in place. What makes me madder still is that the politicians in both parties will likely never consider the radical proposal put forward here. It's a shame that it will take another financial crisis to get Congress and the Executive Branch to really act responsibly.

Painful History Well Told, and a Bold Prescription for the Future

13 Bankers takes us through he painful history of the financial crisis that brought us where we are today and that now makes it so hard to move forward. Simon and Kwak argue that absent reform, another bailout - a more costly bailout with even greater global consequences, millions of jobs lost, and a ruinous impact on our government budget - is unavoidable.

Many Americans apparently do not yet understand how much influence financial institutions have in Washington, DC. Banks used to answer to Washington and were once held accountable for their actions. That is no longer is the case. We have never had such a concentrated banking system in the United States and it's dangerous that so much of our financial future is wrapped up in the big banks.

But the book is not pessimistic. Simon and Kwak offer instances from our history when elected representatives took on concentrated financial power. Each time, most Americans initially did not grasp how the system works, and this proved a major obstacle to reform. But the political leadership was able to explain what needed to be done, and to persuade average Americans that the nature of power in and around the financial sector had become so great and so distorted that something major had to be done.

The book is not anti-finance, but it is very much against the way our biggest banks operate today. The book describes exactly what needs to be done so that what happened in 2008-09 will never be allowed to happen again. Let's hope the prescription works.

Useful, but not groundbreaking or controversial

I'm jumping in here more to vote among the opinions already expressed than to say anything new. I mostly agree with Bruce Lasker. The book is a good straightforward history of how we got to this point in American banking, but is neither deep in its analysis nor strong in its recommendations. If the reviews had been split on this issue I wouldn't have bothered, but since its 9 to 1 against Mr. Lasker, I think it's worth making it 9 to 2.

The opinion in this book is all expressed through word choice. When the authors don't like an increase in lending it is "an orgy of lending." When they do, "banks responded with capital to support growth." People they disagree with "rant," while people they like "point out" or even "prove." But there's never any analysis to back up these opinions, they're painted onto what is basically a factual history. I happen to agree with more than half of their views, but if I didn't, I wouldn't have been convinced by this book. It doesn't help that everything is based on secondary sources, from which the authors take what they like and nothing else.

On the other hand, if you want a factual history, and either agree with the authors or are willing to ignore loaded words, this is an excellent choice. It's well-written, witty, up-to-the-minute and accurate. The opinions are never intrusive, and never foolish. They feel concentrations of banking power are dangerous, which is pretty reasonable, but they ignore the problems caused by the local corruption that grew up in its place. You learn about Jefferson, Madison and Jackson's principled objection to national banking, you won't learn about politicians anxious to create local bank monopolies for their friends and associates, restraining competition in order to maximize profit and control local economies.

You'll learn how deposit insurance and limits on deposit interest reduced bank failures for 50 years, but not how it destroyed middle class savings when high inflation combined with low legal ceilings on interest; you also won't see the terrible customer service that existed until a "shadow" banking system made an end run around the regulations and offered ATM's, high-interest money market accounts, 24-hour-banking, automated deposits, Internet banking and other innovations (when I started working you got a paper paycheck every two weeks that you had to take to a physical bank on your lunch hour as they were open only 9 to 3 on weekdays and the tellers took the same lunch hour as the office workers so you didn't eat lunch on payday, no food allowed in the bank). Sneaky overcharging and predatory lending loom large in this book, with no hint of the advantage to customers when fixed commissions were smashed or companies were forced to improve accounting disclosure.

Wall Street is always the villain, local banks that lend only to their boards of directors and pals and support the local political machine, are whitewashed. The entire S&L crisis is blamed on Wall Street sharpies taking advantage of sleepy local bankers, you won't hear that virtually the entire loss was from commercial lending by oil-patch banks whose strong political connections ran through Texas, not New York. You'll read how Wall Street money flooded into Washington in campaign contributions and lobbying, you won't read about extortion from politicians introducing legislation to expropriate people's financial businesses unless they paid up. You also won't read about the constant movement of financial innovators to get away from the whole messy business of power politics, organizing off-shore, using private vehicles and leaving regulated businesses to come up with better solutions. It's always politicians trying to draw these into the regulatory framework, where they are forced to render unto Caesar, it's not financial innovators lining up to buy political backing for their ideas. Even the harm done by the gigantic financial institutions built entirely by Washington is blamed on Wall Street, not Washington.

I'm not defending Wall Street here, just pointing out there are two sides to the story. Wall Street, and more generally global financial innovation fighting entrenched local traditional practices, has done both good and bad. Mostly it does things that some people will consider good and others will consider bad. The one point of strong agreement I have with the authors is that a system of crony capitalism grew up, and led to a lot of our current problems. Personally, I would attack all crony capitalism, not just financial, as killing it in one place just tends to encourage it to spring up in another. We have crony defense contractors, medical companies, agribusinesses among many others. I grant that financial cronies are more dangerous than the others (except maybe defense contractors) but they are more alike than different. And the fundamental reform has to be political. If someone is handing out government money, it's pointless to outlaw taking it, because someone will always find a way to break the law, and then repay the giver. Stopping the handout is the point.

About the Author
Michael Freeman, professional photographer and best-selling author, was born in England in 1945, took a Masters in Geography at Brasenose College, Oxford University, and then worked in advertising in London for six years. In 1971 he made the life-changing decision to travel up the Amazon with two secondhand cameras, and when Time-Life used many of the pictures he came back with, he embarked on a full-time photographic career. Since then, working for clients that include all the world's major magazines, most notably the Smithsonian Magazine (for which he has shot more than 40 stories over 30 years), Freeman's reputation as one of the world's leading reportage photographers has been consolidated. Of his many books, which have sold over 4 million copies worldwide, more than 60 titles are on the practice of photography. For this photographic educational work he was awarded the Prix Louis Philippe Clerc by the French Ministry of Culture. Freeman's books on photography have been translated into 27 languages.

About the Authors: Donald W. Benbow is a partner of Iowa Quality Systems, and brings extensive teaching and training expertise to this collaboration. For 33 years, he taught college mathematics, statistics, engineering, and computer science courses. He has conducted lean manufacturing seminars, assisted in a Six Sigma project at John Deere Corporation, and developed software for process control applications for a subsidiary of Monsanto Corporation. Benbow is an ASQ certified CQI, CQA, CRE, and CQT.

T. M. Kubiak is Quality and Productivity Executive at Bank of America. Previously he served as director of Six Sigma for Sears, Roebuck and Company, and for nearly 23 years filled several engineering and Six Sigma leadership roles in various locations with Honeywell International. His roles there included principal engineer; Total Quality advisor; manager, Process Improvement, Supply Management; and program manager/technical senior staff, Six Sigma Plus. Kubiak has received many awards, is frequently published in various journals and magazines, and is a sought-after presenter. Kubiak is an ASQ CQE, CRE, Certified Quality Manager, and SSBB.

Tremendous amount of errors

The fact that this is a book on Six Sigma and printed by ASQ, to have numerous errors and typos, makes it even worse. Have they heard of proof reading.... I am also writing an email to the authors.

Otherwise, it is a good book, provides basic information and help in ASQ Certification Exam. I used it as one of the books during my preparation and was able to get the certification.

Please use an additional book to make sure you are not reading the "error" text.

About the Author
Leonard Territo is Professor of Criminology at the University of South Florida, Tampa. Previously, he was Chief Deputy of the Leon County, Florida, Sheriff's Office, and Served for nine years in the patrol, traffic, detective, and personnel and training divisions of the Tampa Police Department. He is former Chairperson of the Department of Police Administration at St. Petersburg Junior College, where he also directed specialized continuing education programs for police officers through the Florida Institute for Law Enforcement. He has authored or coauthored numerous articles and technical reports, as well as eight books, including Police Adminstration: Structures, Process, and Behavior, and Crime and Justice in America.

Charles R. "Mike" Swanson received his bachelor and master's degrees in criminology from Florida State University and a doctorate in public administration from the University of Georgia, where he is a faculty member in the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. His primary responsibilities include providing applied research, technical assistance, and training to Georgia units of state and local government. A former patrol officer and detective with the Tampa Police Department, he also served as Senior Police Planner and Acting Deputy Director of the Florida Governor's Law Enforcement Council. Mike has coauthored five books and is the author or coauthor of numerous monographs, articles, and conference papers.

Neil C. Chamelin, an attorney, is a Hearing Officer in the Florida Division of Motor Vehicles. He previously served as Director of Criminal Justice Programs for Troy State University-European Region; Director of the Florida Police Standards and Training Commission,; Division Director, Standards and Training Division; Florida Department of Law Enforcement; Administrator of the Police Science Division, Institute of Government at the University of Georgia; and Director of the Florida Institute for Law Enforcement. He has also served as a police officer in Sarasota, Florida. He is the coauthor of Criminal Law for Police Officers, Introduction to Criminal Justice, and Police Personnel Selection Process.

Robert W. Taylor is professor and director of the Justice Administration and Leadership Program in the Department of Criminology at the University of Texas at Dallas. Prior to assuming this position, he was the founding director of the Caruth Police Institute. The Institute was established through a $9.5 million grant from the Communities Foundation of North Texas in January 2008, and is located within the Dallas Police Department as a part of the University of North Texas at Dallas. For nearly 15 years, Dr. Taylor was professor and chair of the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of North Texas at Denton. He has an extensive background in academic and professional criminal justice, having served as a sworn police officer and major crimes detective (in Portland, Oregon) and as an active consultant tovarious U.S. and international criminal justice agencies. He has authored or coauthored over one hundred andfifty articles, books, and manuscripts focusing on police administration, contemporary police problems, internationaland domestic terrorism, human and drug trafficking, computer fraud, and criminal justice policy and has been the recipient of nearly $15 million in external funding. Dr. Taylor was awarded the University of NorthTexas Regent’s Lecture Award for 2003 for his work in the Middle East, and in 2008, the Academy of Criminal JusticeSciences presented Dr. Taylor with the O.W. Wilson Award “in recognition of his outstanding contribution topolice education, research and practice.” He is an active member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and the American Society of Criminology.

Useful for more than just school

This was a textbook that was required for one of my college courses. I brought it to work one day; however, and my Regional Security Officer started to flip through it. After about 10 minutes he offered to purchase it from me after I was done with my course. He said the information was relevant and he wanted to read it as a refresher for his investigation purposes. As a result, I rarely read my college textbooks (I'm more of a scanner/find the information from the index kind of student) (work smarter not harder) but the information was actually really good. I've attended numerous/various investigative seminars and classes and the information in this book matched up/applied. Needless to say, I was impressed (for as much credit as you can give a textbook ;)

It's a really great book that pulls you in and doesn't want to let you go. Awesome. Try it. It is well worth the expense even if you aren't taking the class but just have and interest in the field.
