Review
The illustrations, tables, and diagrams are superb...I recommend this book very highly to trainees striving to become skilled pulmonary clinicians and to experts as a look back at their clinical experience that will be useful in teaching. It will help preserve clinical-radiographic correlations as a tool for skillful diagnosis and management of patients. Doody's Notes It is like having your favourite clinical teacher share his/her accumulated clinical nouse in a way that makes the apparently ordinary case stimulating and full of subtlety... I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to specialist registrars and consultants in respiratory medicine - go out and get a copy for your department. British Journal of Hospital Medicine, June 2011

Essentials of World Regional Geography, by Michael Bradshaw, George White, Joseph Dymond, Elizabeth Chacko

This shorter version of the highly successful Contemporary World Regional Geography, 2e gives readers a fresh new approach that combines fundamental geographical elements, internal regional diversity, and contemporary issues. This approach allows serious discussion of cultural and environmental issues, as well as political and economic issues. The main innovation in this completely rewritten text is in the ordering of the material covered. While other texts cut photos, illustrations, and boxed material from their WRG books, this essentials version is a completely rewritten text by the authors of Contemporary World Regional Geography, 2e.

Each of the nine regional chapters opens with a one- or two-page map of the region, short accounts of people or events to provide a personal flavor of the region, an outline of the chapter contents, and a short section placing the region in its wider global context. Each regional chapter is consistently organized by three sections. The first section summarizes the distinctive physical and human geographies of the region; the second section explores the internal diversity of the region at subregional, selected country, and local levels. The third section focuses on a selection of contemporary issues that are important to the people of each region and frequently have implications for the rest of the world. Each regional chapter follows the same framework, allowing students to easily make comparisons from one world region to the next.

Students are encouraged to consider what it means to be part of a global community and to develop their geographical understandings of world events. The authors have created a text that is readable, with a consistent structure within chapters, containing superior maps and illustrations, and finally – to offer a concise and more affordable text.

Law and Gospel: A Theology for Sinners (and Saints), by William McDavid, Ethan Richardson, David Zahl

There’s a big difference between judgment and love, obligation and freedom, a wage and a gift. The difference characterizes an extraordinary amount of our day-to-day experience, often dividing fear from hope, and death from life. At the heart of Christianity lies a similar and related dynamic: between the Law and the Gospel. Far from being a reductive or antiquated distinction, understanding where one ends and the other begins allows a person to see both the Bible and themselves—indeed, the whole world!—in a fresh and enlivening way. Written with the non-theologian in mind, this short volume unpacks the good news of God’s grace with practicality, humor, and a whole lot of heart.

My favorite quote: "While modern day Christian conservatives believe in ...
By Sarah Condon
Mockingbird offers us gospel news for our weary souls, yet again. My favorite quote:

"While modern day Christian conservatives believe in original sin and the penalty of death and generally have all their doctrinal ducks in a row, they will quickly self-select our of the depraved category through 'sanctification' and out of the hell category through strong assurance of (their) salvation. And modern-day Christian liberals simply don't talk much about sin and death, viewing evil as less of a personal force and more of a justice problem. It is both: Our sin makes us guilty, and others' sin makes us victims. Sin is write though our entire world, from fights with your spouse and resentment of your boss to bigotry and systematic oppression. The problem of sin is a problem of self-elevation: Behind individual sins like adultery or greed lies the need to be more-than, to transcend the limits of the flawed, aging, finite people that we are."

If you find yourself (like I do) pulled in both directions, then join the club. This short book is a super accessible way to wrap your brain around the Gospel of Grace. I loved it.

This message is life changing
By Jason Kanz
On February 20, 2010 a major shift occurred in my life. The pastor of my church read Galatians 5:20-21 which says “Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, jgrace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” I sat in the front of the church and wept. I think that was the day that I began to understand the difference between Law and Gospel.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, a new book, Law and Gospel: A Theology for Sinners and Saints, by William McDavid, Ethan Richardson, and David Zahl will provide a great introduction to the distinction. Briefly, God gave us both the law and the gospel but they have different roles. The law was never given as a means of salvation, the law was given to show each of us our absolute inability to live up to God’s perfect standard. It is the gospel, the good news that Jesus Christ came to earth, lived a sinless life, was crucified on the cross, and was raised again to new life on my behalf that provides the power to save. It is Jesus who did the saving.

The first half of the book is dedicated to exploring the role of the law and how it has overtaken many churches. From pulpits all over America, we hear messages of do more/try harder/pull yourself up by your bootstraps. But we fail, again and again. The law tells us what to do, but it is impossible for us to do it and so we stand accused. When people recognize their utter inability, lots of people give up.

But, like good sermons should do, the book begins with the crushing power of the law, but finishes with the life giving power of the gospel. The authors show us that because of Christ’s love for us, he alone accomplished our salvation as a free gift. Then, in my favorite part of the book, they looked at the fruits of the gospel, of what Jesus did. The fruits they listed include: humility, receptivity, gratitude, spontaneity, humor, and freedom.

If you have struggled to understand what Paul was talking about when he said that we are free in Christ, or what I mean when I saw the law/gospel distinction, please get this book.

I needed to know more about the Law and Gospel in a way that I could understand
By Hilibofas
I've had a chance to follow Mockingbird for a few years now. I love everything they have ever put out or written. They have a way of making the book or post very approachable to the everyday man.

Law and Gospel: A Theology For Sinners (and Saints) is one I would recommend to anyone who is dipping their foot into the well of grace. While the title of the book has the word Theology in it that should not Deter you from reading it. This book was written for in a way that everyone can get the concepts that are presented in the book.. You do not need a college degree in religion to understand anything in this book. I never had to pull out a dictionary or research hey word concept on Wikipedia to understand what the authors we're talking about.

If you are ready to try to understand Grace and how the law works I would recommend starting here.

SKIN – a fantasy set in reality

Just for a moment, imagine you are a normal human being, living a relatively satisfactory existence as one of the two genders that form our race. You think you are content inside your own skin.

Now imagine being sentenced to live in the skin of the opposite gender for the rest of your life. There is no parole and no early release for good behaviour.

You must serve the sentence.

There is only one escape: -
•It involves physical pain in the form of surgery.
•It involves emotional pain in the form of family conflict and aggression.
•It involves social pain in the form of unemployment and isolation.
•It involves mental pain in the form of depression, anxiety and stress.
•It involves spiritual pain in the form of uncertainty, doubt and guilt.
•It involves financial pain in the form of expensive drugs and many different treatments, operations and procedures.

My name was Edward Abbott; it isn’t any more.

I thought I was normal, but then I realised that I was different. Now I am what I should have been.

After many harsh experiences in my life, I met a man.

This man forced me to answer a question,
“…Surgery aside, what is the main thing that prevents you from going for the existing procedure?”
I thought about it for a moment.
“I suppose having to live in the body of a male, trying to look like a woman just to prove that I’m able to do it. I’d be terrified of being discovered.”

The man also said,
“…My research has reached that point whereby I believe it possible to change gender without the surgeon and his scalpel.”
“In theory, right?”
“No, the theory time is passed. I believe that it can be done for real.”
“So what’s the catch?” I asked.

Is there a catch, or can it really be done?

Join me as I found out.

Saving one little starfish
By Samuel Rafael
There is no growth without change. For Edward, truer words were never spoken as he finds himself transformed into the lovely and self-actualized, Emilia. This is accomplished with the assistance of Tom, a man who has the scientific expertise to make transgender dreams happen, and as we come to find out, by rather unique means. As a male, Edward was not a person who was obsessed with transformation to womanhood, just suffering from a vague feeling of being out of kilter with life and only focused on expressing his feminine persona in the privacy of his own domain. However, as they say, timing is everything. So when Edward losses nearly all that he holds dear, including his beloved Carly, the time is right for Tom to apply his scientific knowledge and loving assistance in an attempt to save, as he so altruistically relates, "even one little starfish." Tanya Allan's novel "Skin" is a lovely and highly romantic work by a prolific author who writes eloquently about such issues. It is a book that holds your interest from start to finish.

it's okay, but a little disappointing
By Tom M
I am sorry to say that I didn’t care for this story. I do enjoy stories with magical transformations so that part didn’t bother me. What bothered me was the transformation was almost secondary in the story. I think the story could be edited to remove the male portion of the lead character and be rewritten to tell the story of a woman who married a Frenchman. Her husband then died of cancer and she suffered heavy depression as a result. She then met and fell in love with a wealth man much her senior. She becomes his mistress and then his wife, taking over his empire after his death. Doing so would have changed the story very little, which is a measure of how little of a role the transformation played in the overall scheme.

Towards the end of the story where the heroine made love to a man for the first time, became pregnanty, gave birth, married a third man and was pregnant with his child, all like it was the most natural thing in the world, which it wouldn’t have been for someone that was transformed. I kept waiting for something to happen, but it never did.

Skin - if only ????
By Amazon Customer
I just finished reading another of Tanya's wonderfull books. Skin is so uniquely different that one must read it. So very many of us have been so very far down as Edward was, not knowing where to go. I loved that he found a benifactor that was able to save him and introduce him to Emilia. This romantic story is very well written and very well researched as the stories entertwine and the characters come together. We've all known someone like Tom that has a rough exterior and a soft center. I identified very much with Tom trying to portray the tough Brit so fed up with the frailites of others and yet Emilia was able to see through it all and fall deeply in love with him. Tanya's skill in story telling and writing is really wonderful and I eagerly await the next book and the one after that. The only negative, to quote another person that revied this book, is that I finished it. Thank you Tanya Allan very much!

Astrophysics in a Nutshell, by Dan Maoz

A concise but thorough introduction to the observational data and theoretical concepts underlying modern astronomy, Astrophysics in a Nutshell is designed for advanced undergraduate science majors taking a one-semester course. This well-balanced and up-to-date textbook covers the essentials of modern astrophysics--from stars to cosmology--emphasizing the common, familiar physical principles that govern astronomical phenomena, and the interplay between theory and observation.

In addition to traditional topics such as stellar remnants, galaxies, and the interstellar medium, Astrophysics in a Nutshell introduces subjects at the forefront of modern research, including black holes, dark matter, gravitational lensing, and dark energy, all updated with some of the latest observational results. To aid physical understanding, mathematical derivations are kept as simple, short, and clear as possible, and order-of-magnitude estimates, dimensional analysis, and scaling arguments are frequently used. These no-nonsense, "back-of-the-envelope" calculations train students to think like physicists. The book is amply illustrated with simple, clear figures and each chapter ends with a set of problems.

In addition to serving as a course textbook, Astrophysics in a Nutshell is an ideal review for a qualifying exam and a handy reference for teachers and researchers.

Review

Winner of the 2009 Chambliss Astronomical Writing Award for an academic book, American Astronomical Society

One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2007

"Tel Aviv University professor Dan Maoz aims to provide a concise guide to the subject for advanced science undergraduates. The essentials of modern astrophysics are covered, from traditional topics such as stellar remnants and galaxies to recent research including dark matter and dark energy, while training students in order-of-magnitude analysis."--Times Higher Education

"[M]aoz makes generous and excellent use of back-of-the-envelope calculations and approximations to the more complete theory, accurate enough to both illustrate the physics and to arrive at decent numerical answers...Lots of material is squeezed into this thin volume. The treatment of stellar physics is particularly insightful; other topics--galaxies and galactic structure and cosmology, are also very well done."--K.L. Schick, Choice

"The presentation of so much material within 250 pages is done very skillfully, with a judicious balance between mathematical discussion and physical argument. The pedagogic value of the text is greatly enhanced by the problems given at the end of each chapter. Altogether, the book lives well up to the publisher's declared aims."--Leon Mestel, The Observatory

From the Back Cover

Praise from professors who have adopted the book: "Astrophysics in a Nutshell is a wonderful addition to the advanced undergraduate textbook literature. It covers the important physics with sufficient depth to capture the students' curiosity without getting them lost in too much detail. The book is extremely broad, reaching from stellar to extragalactic to cosmological physics. Nevertheless, from the instructor's point of view, the book is constructed in a convenient modular way, so that one can easily select the relevant parts for one's specific course in any of those areas. Finally, the book emphasizes to the student the fundamental interconnectedness of the different astrophysical subfields."--Volker Bromm, University of Texas at Austin

Praise from professors who have adopted the book: "Astrophysics in a Nutshell is an ideal text for a Junior/Senior course. The essential fundamentals are covered, and there are liberal hints of more to come."--James R. Houck, Cornell

Praise from professors who have adopted the book: "Astrophysics in a Nutshell provides a commendably concise and clear presentation of the core material needed for an advanced undergraduate astrophysics class. Students will welcome both the clarity and the consistent mathematical level of Maoz's text."--Phil Armitage, University of Colorado, Boulder

Praise from professors who have adopted the book: Many texts are aimed at being useful to a broad audience. Their aims are generally to be terse, yet informative and pedagogical, accessible, yet current. No book succeeds at this the way Astrophysics in a Nutshell by Maoz does. Despite being cast as an upper-level undergraduate text, I routinely recommend this book for students from beginning undergraduates to beginning graduate students and they all benefit from studying it."--Andrew Zentner, University of Pittsburgh

Praise from professors who have adopted the book: "Astrophysics in a Nutshell is an important addition to the suite of textbooks for undergraduate astronomy and physics majors. It gives a broad introduction to the major areas of astrophysics, and impels students to think through concepts rather than overwhelming them with detail. Due to its broad coverage, I recommend this book to my graduate students preparing for their preliminary examinations."--Rodger Thompson, University of Arizona

"This is, without a doubt, one of the best books that I have used for an introductory course in astrophysics over the past decade. The book is unique in providing a pedagogical and authoritative overview of all the important topics in present-day astrophysics with mathematical rigor. The equations are self-contained and well explained, and the results are derived in a concise, factual manner with careful attention to details. My students, teaching assistant, and I have all found the book to be outstanding."--Avi Loeb, Harvard University

"Dan Maoz's Astrophysics in a Nutshell is perfect for an advanced astrophysics course for physical science majors. It covers modern topics from stars to galaxies and cosmology. I've already begun using problems from the book to test our first-year graduate students."--John Huchra, Harvard University

"Astrophysics in a Nutshell is just that--a no-nonsense, fast-paced textbook that authoritatively covers the concepts underlying modern astronomy at an advanced undergraduate level. Dan Maoz does a remarkably good job of presenting the widest range of material that can be reasonably contained in a serious one-semester course. The book's scholarship is excellent and fully up to date, and I will certainly adopt it in my undergraduate class."--Greg Laughlin, University of California, Santa Cruz

"I have nothing but praise for this textbook. It is a significant contribution to a field that is short on introductions to astronomy for science majors. Astrophysics in a Nutshell fills a basic need, and I will give it a try in my course."--Lynne Hillenbrand, California Institute of Technology

"Astrophysics in a Nutshell introduces the serious student to the tools, diversity, and power of modern astrophysical theory. In one panoramic volume, both text and reference, the author presents and applies essential concepts and equations, introducing the methods by which we seek to understand the inner workings of the cosmos. It will make a useful addition to the libraries of novice and pundit alike."--Adam Burrows, University of Arizona

"Despite the glut of introductory descriptive astronomy texts, there is a serious need for a one-semester introductory astronomy/astrophysics textbook that caters to mathematically literate students. This book fills that void and is a welcome addition on that count."--Ronald F. Webbink, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Great overview of the topic - both for not only the advanced student but also the interested amateur
By David Johnson
While I have a very light background in physics, I got this book hoping to get a high-level understanding of the subject with the goal to gain an understanding sufficient to write fictions or entertainment simulations which roughly respect the principles at play in the real universe. It did not disappoint! In addition to the rich amount of technical formulae and exercises to aid in calculations, the author does a great job of categorically going over the topic. I learned much about the different types of stars and celestial objects, the physical forces involved in their creation and sustanance, their lifecycles, sizes, scales. So even if you're not a technical student, I'd recommend this as a great book to be an informed enthusiast about astrophysics.

Resourceful Introductory Astrophysics Textbook
By G. A. Schoenagel
Aptly fulfills its goals. Concise, yet incredibly informative.
A truly beautiful excursion into astrophysics with useful problems for the student to explore and expanding upon the textual material.
I have enjoyed this textbook very much and can hardly praise it enough.
Pitched at just the right level for a first initiation into the subject. Most accessible to third year physics students for whom calculus is
second-nature. Paper and pencil should be in hand to complete simple details of derivations, or to perform simple calculus manipulations.
The chapters on stellar evolution (i.e, 3, 4,& 5) ,in particular, are presented with clear physical motivation behind the mathematical derivations.
Additionally, the text contains a brief section on (the basics of) gravitational lensing, coupled to experiments therefrom.
The selection of Problems for student learner to solve--at Chapter Endings--comprises a rich resource in which to learn tools of the
trade, tools of use whether one aspires to Astronomy or Physics.(e.g., Dimensional Analysis, Physical set-up of Differential Equations,
Simplifying Physical Assumptions, Modelling, Taylor Expansions)
Most of these problems are multi-step derivations, the author providing guidance to their solution via helpful hints.
(Two nice examples: Number 7 a-c,of Chapter Six, which introduces the student to Modified Newtonian Dynamics and Number 4 a-d,
of Chapter Five, dealing with ionized photons inside a cloud of atomic Hydrogen.) Simply put, a great pedagogic strategy.
A superb entree for continuing exploration into Astrophysics: well worded prose , a nice mix of mathematical and physical insight.

This is a wonderful, concise overview of Astrophysics
By lee
This is a wonderful, concise text. It gives a no B.S. overview of Astrophysics. There is no fluff, and only important results are derived. There is no wasted space in this book. If you want a quick book to get your feet wet in astrophysics, this is the book for you. If you are a junior or senior physics major, you should be able to read it and work through all the problems within in about month. To do this I would try to work through 2 chapters a week, which is probably about 12-15 hours a week at most.

The tone of the text is very good and it is quite readable. It is organized well. The author does a great job of helping the student develop PHYSICAL intuition. The text is focused on the physics and not being mathematically rigorous. The author should consider writing more texts.

This is a great introductory book. It is by no means meant to be extremely detailed on any particular topic. If you want an introductory book that tries to be detailed in all aspects buy "An Introduction to Modern Astrophysics" by Carroll and Ostlie. But who has time to read a Carroll & Ostlie's 1300 page manifesto? Astrophysics in a Nutshell is only ~230 pages!

An Introduction to English Poetry, by James Fenton

A wise, absorbing, and surprising introduction to poetry written in English, from one of England's leading poets

James Fenton is that rare scholar "not ashamed to admit that he mostly reads for pleasure" (Charles Simic, The New York Review of Books). In this eminently readable guide to his abiding passion, he has distilled the essense of a library's--and a lifetime's--worth of delight.

The pleasures of his own verse can be found in abundance here: economy, a natural ease, and most of all, surprise. What is English poetry? Fenton argues that it includes any recited words in English that marshall rhythm for their meaning--among them prisoners's work songs, Broadway show tunes, and the cries of street vendors captured in verse. From these beginnings, Fenton describes the rudiments of--and, most important, the inspiration for--the musical verse we find in books, and concludes with an illuminating discussion of operas and songs. Fenton illustrates his comments with verse from all over the English-speaking world.

Catholic in his taste, shrewd in his distinctions, and charmingly frank, Fenton is an ideal guide to everything to do with poetry, from the temperament of poets to their accomplishment, in all its variety. In all his writing, prose or verse, Fenton has always had the virtue of saying, in a way that seems effortless, precisely what lies at the heart of the matter. In this vein, An Introduction to English Poetry is one of his highest accomplishments.

For those of you who hate text books this is a great resource. :P
By Jennifer Sanchez
Fenton writes in a way that is not too difficult to understand for those of you who are just beginning to study poetry. He's engaging and interesting while he skims over the basics and sinks into the more difficult aspects of English poetry. If you are the kind of person who would rather read a book than study a text book this is the perfect choice for you. This book was required for an English class that I was taking and I found that I was able to understand the more complicated poets a little easier than I have with any other texbook I've read.

“Spicy, fast, and enthralling . . . a breathless read.”
–Julia London, author of The Perils of Pursuing a Prince

About the Author
Monica McCarty’s interest in the Scottish clan system began in the most unlikely of places: a comparative legal history course at Stanford Law School. After a short but enjoyable stint practicing law, she realized that her legal vocation and her husband’s transitory career as a professional baseball player were not exactly a match made in heaven. So she traded in her legal briefs for Scottish historical romances with sexy alpha heroes. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and their two young children. If You Liked the First Book, You'll Be Disappointed
By Baazumi
Having thoroughly enjoyed "Highlander Untamed", I was eager to begin "Highlander Unmasked" and for the first chapter I was delighted. However, as the story progressed or should I say as the subjective thoughts of the characters progressed, I could barely get through the book. I found myself skipping page after page filled with nothing more than the Alex's and Meg's personal musings about how they felt about themselves and each other. This type of non-dialog between the characters made up the bulk of the book. What a disappointment after reading the first book! What made "Highlander Untamed" so good is the story was the focus of the book and the subjective thoughts and feelings of the characters were well balanced within the story. Not so with "Highlander Unmasked" - this book was burdened down with redundancy, restating the same thoughts and feelings over and over and OVER again, the same trap most, but not all, (never Julie Garwood) romance writers seem to fall into. This constant restating of personal subjectivity seems to be a cop out on writing the STORY. What a shame, this book showed such promise. Had the story focused more on Alex and less on Meg, it would have worked much better and grounded the story; it was after all called "Highlander Unmasked". Although in the beginning Alex was strong and manly, as the story unfolded Alex was basically dazed and confused most of the time, and the easy charismatic nature brought out in the first book was gone. Meg was nosy and pushy, with little discrimination and undermined Alex's efforts to the point he was more in danger from her meddling than from his enemies. In the first book, Rory and Isabelle were strong defined characters. You got a strong sense of Rory as a man and Isabelle faced her flaws and made conscious decisions to come up against herself and work through them. In this book, Alex and Meg are fragmented, whiny, and constantly conflicted characters for the most part, and there's way too much of Meg. What showed great promise disappointed greatly.

Enjoyable
By Carol A. Spradling
Meg MacKinnon has to marry in order to defend her clan's holdings. Faced with a deadline to achieve marital bliss, she heads to court in search of a husband. Alex MacLeod must keep his identity and purpose hidden. Too bad for him that Meg recognizes him as one of the men who aided her and her mother during a roadside attack.

Ms McCarty does a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. Meg and Alex are both strong, very likable, but not over powering.

I did feel there were times when the story bogged down with details and I rolled my eyes at a few phrases. But, the author did stay focused on the plot and kept the action moving.

This is my first read of this author and I have already scribbled a note to myself listing the title of her next book to go in my tbr pile.

For Love or Duty...........an agonizing & sizzling sequel
By Misuzmama
Never has a man held such a burden. In Alex MacLeod's mission hangs the fate of his Highland people, a way of life. He must do everything in his power to prevent the King's plan to colonize the Highlands with Lowlanders. In Edinburgh, Alex uses his cunning, stealth and charm to disguise where his loyalties lie. The King's men, not knowing of the serpent lying in their midst, reveal the details of their mission. Only a beguiling woman stands in his way. A woman who awakens a need in him he never new existed with the power to devastate his mind, body, soul and the fate of his people.

Never has a woman held such a burden. Meg MacKinnon holds the fate of her clan in her hands. With an ailing father, she needs to find a trustworthy and loyal husband who will support her simple brother as chief. The Edinburgh court holds her answer, that is until she attacked on her journey there. Amidst the horror of the battle she is saved by a mysterious highlander, whose visage -days later- she cannot forget. An encounter at court with the brother of a neighboring clan chief raises her suspicions. A man with honor, strength and loyalty? Although she may wish it, he is not a man for her. A mercenary is not the man to support her brother and help lead her people. How could a man who displays sweet tenderness and love be loyal to no one? Meg has her doubts and will stop at nothing until her highlander is unmasked.

I love these types of books. A book where the hero has to make a life altering decision -his people vs his woman. *Sniff* Lots of roller coaster of emotions here. *semi spoiler* Just as he realizes that he loves her, he must be cruel and push her away in the worst way possible. His duty to his people comes before his heart. This comes just as heroine finally realizes that she has found true love. Not just a another duty that she humbly has accepted for all these years. The devastation is immediate. The reader is sucked into a whirlwind of emotion. Rooting for the highland people and for the love of the H/H -seemingly impossible.

So if you like highlander tales (seriously, who doesn't like those sexy Scots? ;))with a bit of bittersweet and tender emotion added to the mix then you love this one. A deluge of historical detail, which I found fascinating. Great characterizations and an action filled plot that has several swoon worthy scenes. This can be read as a stand alone book. The prequel 'Highlander Untamed' is good (****), but I found this one even better.

Review
The ultimate chronicler of twentieth-century mans consciousness and anxiety. (William Golding)

As comical, satirical, atmospherical an entertainment as he has given us. (The Daily Telegraph, London)

About the Author
Graham Greene (1904-1991), whose long life nearly spanned the length of the twentieth century, was one of its greatest novelists. Educated atBerkhamstedSchoolandBalliolCollege,Oxford, he started his career as a sub-editor of theLondonTimes. He began to attract notice as a novelist with his fourth book,Orient Express,in 1932. In 1935, he trekked across northernLiberia, his first experience inAfrica, told inA Journey Without Maps(1936). He converted to Catholicism in 1926, an edifying decision, and reported on religious persecution inMexicoin 1938 inThe Lawless Roads, which served as a background for his famousThe Power and the Glory, one of several “Catholic” novels (BrightonRock,The Heart of the Matter,The End of the Affair).During the war he worked for the British secret service in Sierra Leone; afterward, he began wide-ranging travels as a journalist, which were reflected in novels such asThe Quiet American,Our Man in Havana,The Comedians,Travels with My Aunt,The Honorary Consul,The Human Factor,Monsignor Quixote, andThe Captain and the Enemy. As well as his many novels, Graham Greene wrote several collections of short stories, four travel books, six plays, two books of autobiography,A Sort of LifeandWays of Escape, two biographies, and four books for children. He also contributed hundreds of essays and film and book reviews toThe Spectatorand other journals, many of which appear in the late collectionReflections. Most of his novels have been filmed, includingThe Third Man, which the author first wrote as a film treatment. Graham Greene was named Companion of Honour and received the Order of Merit among numerous other awards.

Christopher Hitchens is a widely published polemicist and frequent radio and TV commentator. He is the author of many books, including Why Orwell Matters, Letters to a Young Contrarian, The Trial of Henry Kissinger, as well as books on Cyprus, Kurdistan and Palestine, including Blaming the Victims coedited with Edward Said. He is a contributing editor to Vanity Fair and writes for, among others, Slate, The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Book Review, and The Washington Post. He lives with his family in Washington, D.C.

Satirical spoof. I found myself giggling throughout.
By Linda Linguvic
This 1958 novel was a complete surprise to me. I'd read three books by this author before and found them dark and introspective. But "Our Man in Havana" is a satirical spoof and I found myself giggling throughout. It deals with a theme that Greene has revisited on many occasions - that of a spy in a foreign country. But this time, it's all in fun, although between the 220 pages of this slim volume, he manages to say a few important things about social class, the Catholic Church, and the absurdity of international relations.
The hero of the story is Jim Wormold, a divorced vacuum cleaner salesman from England in pre-Castro Cuba. His 17-year-old daughter is growing up fast and he finds he needs money. So when the British Secret Service recruits him, he invents a whole world of secret agents and intrigues just to keep the money flowing. He is even sent a secretary, which introduces a bit of romance to the outrageous plot. All of a sudden, the lies he has invented seem to be coming true and the plot thickens, moving along at a breakneck pace. I was totally involved, and found myself laughing out loud at times. What a delightful read! Highly recommended.

Wickedly entertaining
By Andrew McCaffrey
I went into OUR MAN IN HAVANA with very few expectations. I was under the vague impression that it was a thriller of sorts and I somehow knew that there had a been a film made out of it a number of decades back. So I was a bit surprised when I started reading the book and found out that it was a comedy. Surprised and delighted, because OUR MAN turned out to be one of the more understated and enjoyable satires that I've read in a good long time.
The book is a smart send up of a lot of the standard material one would have found in the noir films and books of the time (the novel was published in 1958, when the genre was starting to wear itself out). A British secret agent, looking to increase his community of contacts, has arranged for an ordinary vacuum cleaner salesman to file reports of any unusual activity in the area. The merchant, Mr. Wormold, reluctantly agrees to this arrangement for no reason other than the lure of extra money; he has a teenage daughter with very expensive tastes (to whit: men and horses). To keep himself employable, Wormold constructs a whole world of intrigue to write home about. The back-cover hints at one of the book's funnier gags, but all of Wormold's fictions (and especially the reaction they receive at the other end) are hilarious.
Despite the comic portions of the plot, the characters themselves are allowed to retain a certain dignity. The prose is also as lush as one would expect from a Graham Greene novel. One particular scene stood out as a wonderful piece of writing. Placing two main characters inside a dark, dingy saloon, Greene describes the other inhabitants as looking like paratroopers about to parachute out of an airplane. Their quick glances at the door and their hushed demeanor are all exquisitely described. I like comedies as much as the next guy, but it's rare to find one that is simply this literate and also so entertaining.
OUR MAN IN HAVANA is a relatively short novel; my copy clocks in at just two hundred twenty pages. It makes for a quick read, but not a throwaway one. It's smooth enough to be read as a straightforward thriller, if that's what you're in the mood for, as its comedy is more on the subtle than on the broad side. But, that said, the neat cuts of satire make this a hilarious and whimsical tale.

His Best and Most Humorous Entertainment
By A. Ross
More successful than most of Greene's "entertainments," this comic spy tale set in pre-Castro Cuba concerns an insignificant little man-a vacuum cleaner salesman to be precise-who, against his better judgment, becomes MI6's "man in Havana." A longtime Havana resident, Englishman Jim Wormold is divorced, but the custodian of his beautiful, Catholic teenage daughter, Millie. One day he is approached by Hawthorne-a hilariously daft MI6 agent, whose speech is littered with upper crust slang-who shanghais him into becoming a spy. Although he is resistant to the whole notion, his best friend (a German named Hasselbacher), suggests he simply manufacture his sources and intelligence and take the ample money. Millie's expensive tastes and his own devotion to her result in his succumbing to this temptation, and he spends a few happy weeks inventing subagents and fake intelligence. For the first time in years he's doing something interesting, and no longer has money worries-in the funniest bit, he submits drawings of vacuum cleaner parts as sketches of a new Cuban weapons installation.
Of course, this being Greene, complications arise. He is sent reinforcements from the London office, and must scramble to keep them in the dark as to his deception. At the same time, his inventions seem to be taking on a life of their own as people start dying around him, and somebody seems to think he's a real spy. Integral to all this is the ever-present Captain Seguras, a policeman of some renown as a sadist who seeks Millie's hand in marriage. Although a deep melancholy and tragedy lurks in the background, and there's a rather lame love injected, it remains a delightfully absurd tale, one of Greene's better efforts. One is rather reminded of Joseph Conrad's classic, The Secret Agent, in which an ordinary shopkeeper receives payment as a spy for doing nothing-payments which allow him to keep the company of a beautiful woman-and whose misguided scheme ultimately crumbles around him.
