Terrific Introduction to Game Theory Experiments

I recently used this book in an introductory course in experimental methods in political science, taught at Columbia University. (I used the book in a seminar for juniors but it would also be appropriate for first year graduate students.) The book was recommended to me by a leading experimentalist in political science, and its easy to see why. It is filled with practical suggestions, on everything from recruiting subjects, to writing instructions, to analyzing data. It's many references to the literature (as well as sample syllabi) are very helpful. It is also short and readable, and reasonably priced. One caveat: if you are more interested in the psychology tradition to laboratory experiments, there are more appropriate books. Also, it does not deal with field experiments. But if you are interested in the game theoretic/economic tradition of laboratory experiments, it is hard to beat as a practical introduction. In short, a terrific book. Here, Katherine Tate examines the significance of race in the U.S. system of representative democracy for African Americans. The first half of the book examines whether black members of the U.S. House legislate and represent their constituents differently than white members do. Representation is broadly conceptualized to include not only legislators' roll call voting behavior and bill sponsorship, but also the symbolic acts in which they engage. The second half looks at the issue of representation from the perspective of ordinary African Americans based on a landmark national survey.

Tate's findings are mixed. But, in the main, legislators' race does shape how they represent their constituents and how constituents evaluate them. African Americans view black representatives more positively than they do white representatives, even those who belong to their own political party. Black legislators, however, are just as likely as white representatives to sponsor and gain passage of bills in the House. Tate also concludes that black House members are more liberal as a group than are their black constituents, but that there is considerable divergence in the quality and type of representation they provide.

The findings reported here will generate controversy in the fields of politics, law, and race, particularly as debate commences over renewing the Voting Rights Act, which is set to expire in 2007.

an excellent article stretched into a not-so-excellent book

This book kind of meanders around from topic to topic, rather than being focused on a specific thesis. Tate wanders around from theoretical justifications for electing more Black legislators to objective descriptions of what minority legislators do to poll data. I didn't feel like Tate really tied one part of the book to another very effectively, nor did I feel like her use of theory and history said anything all that interesting.

Having said that, I do think her use of poll data is worth reading. She discusses a survey of Black voters, and compares Black voters living in districts represented by a Black congressperson to those represented by Republicans and White Democrats. Much to my surprise, she finds some significant differences: Black voters in Black-represented districts are somewhat more likely to have heard of their federal legislator, and much more supportive of him or her, than Black voters living in White-dominated congressional districts. They are also slightly more interested in politics generally, though the differences may not be statistically significant. This data certainly makes a persuasive (though by no means irrefutable) case for race-conscious districting.

On balance, this book reads like a really good scholarly article (on the poll data) that was stretched into a so-so book.

One of the best books on Minority Representation!!

In the American political system it is critical that all groups are represented and that within each district constituents feel that their voices are heard. Katherine Tate addresses the issues that face African Americans in their fight for representation. Tate contributes greatly to the traditional American politics question, what is representation, while adding to the debate over the worth of majority-minority districts. Black Faces in the Mirror is a meaningful addition to preexisting literature on African American congressional representation yet, it is distinguished from other studies, because not only does Tate address the debate over race and representation but she does so through an empirical analysis.

I am a currently a college student and I have read this book several times. Black Faces in The Mirror is definitely a must read for those that would like to know more about minority representation, the majority-minority redistricting debate, the role of representatives in the U.S. Congress, the history of African-Americans in Congress, and much more!

Jonathan Mayo joined the BBC in 1987, first working in radio and then television, where he won awards for his documentaries. He is the author of The Assassination of JFK: Minute by Minute and D-Day: Minute by Minute. He lives in Surrey with his wife and son. Emma Craigie is a writer and teacher. She is the author of Chocolate Cake with Hitler and Who Was - King Henry VIII. She lives in Somerset with her husband and four children.

Well paced, well documented book, of reference quality, reads like a novel

This book is part of a "Minute by Minute" Series of a few books which trace some historical events. Jonathan Mayo has written several such books, and has a background with the BBC. The book is written in a journalistic style, largely in the present tense and is very thorough in its listing of events and historical characters, and thus quite educational. It is fast and easy reading. By way of "full disclosure", the co-author Emma Craigie is my first cousin, once removed--and that fact peaked my curiosity about buying it. I had not read anything of hers previously.

Very Misleading Title

The book's title Hitler's Last Day Minute by Minute: The hidden story of an SS family in wartime Germany is misleading. I read a serialization of this book in the UK press. The serialization concentrated on the actual last day in the Bunker. I expected the full book to be details of the same. Less than a third of the book is about the persons in the Bunker or Hitler himself. The details of Hitler's last day are superficial. Everything about that is well known and nothing "hidden."

The book felt as if the authors chose random personal accounts from that day and could only tie them together chronologically (hour by hour not minute by minute). The greatest part of the book is personal anecdotes of people nowhere near Hitler that day. What do the actions of future US President John F. Kennedy, in a California hotel room, have to do with Hitler's last day? He was not yet a politician, but was a reporter. What was the point of mentioning how much his newspaper was paying him? If you are looking to read a detailed account about what happened to Hitler and his entourage in the Bunker that day, look elsewhere.

The title hooked me, the text bored me.

A unique approach to the last days of WWII, but the minute by minute format didn't work well making it hard to track. Because the story jumped around to keep the format, it lost momentum and my interest. Significant chunks of the work is made up from primary resource citations without adequate analysis to justify it. It's not plagiarism, but lazy history to meet a page count. I spent 99 cents (Kindle special). Probably would have enjoyed a 99 cent donut more.

Holiday Hoax - Holiday Happiness

This was a great and quick read. Flowed seamlessly and the romance, relationship developed realistically. The happy ending finally came, but not without realistic stress and strife. Loved this book.

short, but ok read

this story was about a romance between a schoolteacher and a rich guy pretending to be a regular guy. i liked the part where she buys the xmas tree. if the charm of the rest of the story matched that it would've been a four star read. the editing was good, the storytelling was fine. i had no trouble finishing it, but i wasn't engaged in the characters enough to read it again.

Cutesey Christmas Story

This is one of those short, feel-good, holiday stories. The story moved at a really quick pace, and because the story is so short, the romance didn't have a whole lot of development, yet when the book ended, I was very satisfied with the reading experience it provided. Ms. Probst is a seasoned author and you can tell by the way in which the story is written. Furthermore, the editing is nice and tight, and although there isn't a whole lot of character development--another casualty of the short length--the author still managed to make me feel connected to them.

Aidan is from a wealthy family; he leads a very privileged life and is one of New York's most eligible bachelors. Aidan, however, is not happy with his life. To get away from everything for a while, and figure out what will make him happy, Aidan takes off to the upstate New York area for a few weeks. When the story begins, Aidan is working at a Christmas tree farm, leading so-called "normal" life. His most ardent wish is to find a nice normal woman who will love him for himself, and not for his family name or money. Enter Isabella, a sweet, beautiful, kindhearted third grade teacher. Isabella and Aidan meet when she comes to the tree farm where he works to buy a Christmas tree. Their first encounter is pretty funny, and from that point on the story moves at a fast pace to its conclusion.

At first Aidan does not reveal his family history, so Isabella has no idea that he is extremely wealthy. As you might expect, before Aidan can reveal the truth, Isabella finds out about his background, which then threatens the couple's new found happiness. Of course, things are quickly resolved and the two get their HEA. I really liked Aidan and I sympathized with his plight--I wish I could've empathized, but in order to do that I'd have to have a few million dollars of play money lying around. LOL Isabella too is a nice character. I loved the fact that the couple did not rush into bed, but instead took the time to time to get to know one another. Because the story is so short, we only get to see Aidan and Isabella together a few times, yet still when the two declared their love for one another I found it believable.

The book makes for a very satisfying read. I liked it and would recommend it as a worthwhile read. FYI, there is a love scene, which is fairly graphic, although not, IMO, overly so. Furthermore, the love scene is easily skipped and no crude language is used. Happy reading!
