About the Author

Simon Priest, PhD, is president and chief executive officer of virtualTEAMWORKS.com, which specializes in experiential learning on the Internet. He is also a retired full professor from Brock University in Canada and the executive director of the Corporate Adventure Training Institute, a research center of excellence. He was an interim director of Canadian Tire's corporate university. A member of the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) since 1983, he chaired their research task force, safety practices task force, and student research grants committee while also contributing on the journal editorial board, scholarship committee, conference steering groups, and journal editorships.

Dr. Priest's contributions to the field of adventure programming have had an international impact. He has been a scholar in residence and has been awarded visiting fellowships in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, England, and several other European nations. He has studied and taught about outdoor leadership in more than 40 countries around the world.

Dr. Priest has researched and written extensively on the topic of adventure programming. He has authored or edited several books and book chapters, and his articles have appeared in publications such as the Journal of Adventure Education and Outdoor Leadership, the Journal of Experiential Education, Journal of Leisure Research, Leisure Sciences, Leisure Studies, and the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Dr. Priest received his doctorate in outdoor recreation from the University of Oregon in 1986.

Michael Gass, PhD, is a full professor and chair of the department of kinesiology and member of the award-winning outdoor education program at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). This accredited program is recognized as one of the best undergraduate and graduate training programs in the world, and its students are some of the finest emerging professionals in the field of adventure programming. Dr. Gass has helped to produce numerous pivotal books for the field, including Book of Metaphors: Volume II, Adventure Therapy: Therapeutic Applications of Adventure Programming, and Program Accreditation Standards for Adventure Programs with Jed Williamson. He has conducted numerous international workshops and trainings, and his writing has appeared in professional journals around the world. He currently directs several evidence-based research projects for the American Youth Foundation and Project Adventure to validate and promote best practices in the field of adventure programming.

Dr. Gass served as president of the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) in 1990 and was the chair of AEE's Therapeutic Adventure Professional Group in 1992-93 and 1995-96. He also was the chair of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance's Council for Outdoor Education in 1994. Currently he is the editor of the Journal for Therapeutic Schools and Programs and serves on the review board for the Journal of Experiential Education. He also served for 10 years on AEE's Program Accreditation Council.

Dr. Gass received his PhD in experiential education from the University of Colorado at Boulder and completed postdoctoral studies in marriage and family therapy. When not with his family, he can be found climbing or wilderness running.

The Adventure Leaders 'Bible'

If you either are an adventure activities leader, or in training to be one Effective Leadership in Adventure Programming is an invalueable book to have at hand.
If you are already one it is usful for doing self reviews on your current performances, as it at the end of each of the 22 chapters it has a review box called 'effective adventure leaders should', a box containing a brief review of all the main points of that chapter which directly relate to the practical aspects of what leaders should be doing to ensure maximium safety within the group, while allowing the group to get the most out of the adventure experience they have been taken on. - I can almost garentee that every leader will pick up several tips from these sections no matter how experienced they re within the adventure leadership field.
If you are training to be an adventure leader, then each of the chapters guide you through different situations, highlighting not only the actions of the coach but in the ways the clients will react from these actions in different situations depending on there previous experience, motivation, and fears. Each chapter starts with a given relistic situation which directly relates to the theme of the chapter, which is then used to explode open the actions of the group and the leader in the given situation and analysis in small detail, the quality of the planning, leadership, and group advancement.
Due to the nature of the subject it can often feel like heavy reading (which it is), but it does have everything you could ever need to know within it's pages, and so makes it the best book on the subject I know of, and being on an B.A. Adventure Education course, I've read quite a few.
Also highly recommended by me to compliment it is the book Adventure Programming by John C. Miles(Editor), Simon Priest(Editor). Hardcover (December 1999)

Should be mandatory reading for outdoor leaders

This was a textbook for an outdoor recreation class in my undergrad. The book was good enough physical and soft skills instruction that I still reference it today. It is an excellent book for gaining outdoor leadership knowledge, and is great for reviewing skills. I'm now an High Adventure program director (take folks kayaking, climbing, skydiving, etc) and I can attribute a lot of my skills to the course where this book was used. It had great sections on planning excursions, dealing with new outdoor adventurers, environmental protection and conflict resolution. This book addressed exactly what should be in an outdoor leader's guide. I highly recommend it for anyone going into outdoor leadership, especially if doing it professionally. And honestly, I wish it was mandatory reading for scouts and especially scout leaders when I was in the Boy Scouts, and definitely today.

I got this book because it was required for two of my classes and thought it was going to be just another text book but it turns out to be interesting, well organized, and full of useful information. It is also very relevant to anyone who like going on adventures.

All in all its a book worth getting.

This book worked very well for me.

Great book - I used last years version of this book to learn revit on my own. You cant pick and choose though, you have to do the lessons in order. I am now completing projects for my office on revit, and use this version as a reference. I've learned many CADD programs, and learning Revit was pretty simple using this. Also there are many humorous asides which this book that much more enjoyable.

Originally, I planned on giving this textbook at least a 4 star review, since at first, the concepts and step-by-step instructions were easy to understand, follow, and grasp. However, as I progress through each chapter, I'm noticing some very troubling patterns emerging that I want you to know about.

First, the author does to an excellent job of creating a narrative that is fairly easy to follow. You won't get lost using this book. He takes you along the road to completion of the book's project and helps keep the text free from sterile language. That said, certain limitations about a book like this become quite obvious.

To begin, this isn't a book you'd buy to learn Revit. Sound odd that I'd say that, but it's true. You aren't LEARNING Revit here. You're learning how to use Revit to complete a rote project. There's a important distinction between learning something and learning how to get a result. This book's purpose seems to be to get a result, not dive into the software and really know it.

For example, if you follow along per the author's instructions, you will achieve success. Great! But now test yourself. Put the book away and try to do it again on your own. Trouble? Likely, since the author does not devote much of the text to explain why you're performing certain steps. Just that you have to and you'll get a result. I wanted more "why do this", not just "do this", as learning software sometimes requires explanation of processes and correcting your own mistakes.

Speaking of mistakes: When you make a mistake, and it will happen, it's frustrating to have to rewind through the text to find where you "might" have made the mistake and correct it in your model. Sometimes you don't know if you've done something wrong until much later, and since the book is written in linear fashion (step 1,2,3...) for the entire project, it's unclear how to fix things. There isn't much depth of discussion about correcting errors, just "do this and it'll be done"!

Further, the book's publishing suffers from a bad case of "small graphicitis" where each figure shown in the book is printed at a low dpi and in b/w only, that it's often very confusing to understand the author's graphic examples. There were many times I had to experiment to find out what line or point he was referring to in figure x.x. In other words, this book should have been printed on heavier weight paper (not newsprint) and in full color to help clarify the author's examples.

I'm using this book for a college introduction course in Revit. The instructor and my fellow students have found numerous errors, omissions, or foolish procedures already (approx thru chapter 8) that the author should have corrected or re-written. I'm not saying the author is recklessly inaccurate, but it would serve students well to avoid rote methodology here.

Bottom line: While I'm sure it's tough to write a solid textbook, more emphasis should be placed on concepts and compulsory practice, rather than a "just do it my way and you'll have this cool building done" approach. I don't feel like I'm learning Revit. I feel like I'm making something in Revit, but I wouldn't pass any Revit cert testing.

Advice: seek additional sources of knowledge in other texts or online if you really want to know Revit Architecture.

A PROFESSIONAL SPEAKS WITH COMMON SENSE AND HEART.

Common sense and psychiatry seem an oxymoron though this book addresses some of the hijinx of a field prostituted to the Insurance companies.
I worked in the mental health field for many years and found the labeling of human spirit and soul seachers a task worthy only of those who are
responsible with their "forecasting". Self-fullfiling prophecies can be damaging if not life altering. This author raises questions and creates thought provoking suggestions as to how we might rely less on labeling for the sake of payment, and more on common sense and creative planning for wellness.

The World According to Allen Frances

In Saving Normal, Allen Frances mentions how "expert opinion" tends to play an important role in the DSM revision process, and how he sought to limit its role in DSM-IV by requiring extensive hard data before making any important changes. Saving Normal is itself a summary of Allen Frances' own "expert opinion," and it is very light on data or references to empirical research in general. Of course, Allen Frances *is* a valuable expert to consult about these issues, and I generally agree with his overarching points. But if one is looking for a scholarly introduction to these broader debates, I would look elsewhere, as Frances does not place his views firmly within the the large body of scholarship on these topics.

The strongest chapters of this book are, in my opinion, "Diagnostic Inflation," "Fads of the Present," and "Taming Diagnostic Inflation." In particular, I found his comprehensive list of proposals for limiting diagnostic inflation to be very valuable reading. There are several chapters which feel somewhat unnecessary - the anecdotes about the benefits and costs of diagnosis at the end and Frances' cursory, loosely cited review of the history of psychiatry pre-DSM-III, especially.

While Frances provides a valuable perspective and many of his critiques generally feel worth reading, there is a certain lack of nuance to his portrayal of the issues. Diagnostic inflation is a very complex topic with many different likely causes, and I wish Frances had done more to ground his viewpoint in the empirical literature connected to each diagnostic category he addressed. (For example, he mentions a very interesting study about ADHD diagnosis and the month a child was born in, and I wish he had included more evidence along those lines for the other categories he discusses.) It's easy to point to prevalence rates and label them as ludicrous on their face, but I wish he had gone farther.

For example, Frances talks at length about the expansion of adult bipolar diagnosis, and how it has spawned a boom in the prescription of antipsychotic medications, which have a variety of serious side effects. However, he does not put this clearly in context -- primarily, that the expansion of bipolar diagnosis was meant to address the fact that many patients who appear to have unipolar depression experience dangerous manic symptoms when given antidepressant medications. (Indeed, several of Frances' anecodotes describing the perils of misdiagnosis feature this exact problem!) These serious negative side effects can lead to suicide, and, just like with the antipsychotic medications, Big Pharma was sued for downplaying them. The boundary between bipolarity and unipolar depression is a very complex, nuanced issue, and Frances does not sufficiently discuss the difficult cost/benefit analysis needed here.

Finally, Saving Normal focuses so much on psychiatry as an institution, but at many points Frances hints that psychiatry is used to solve problems that are best solved in other ways. I wish he had gone into more detail on this, zooming out to touch on how school funding could be allocated differently, how sexually violent predator laws could be improved, etc.

In the end, I think Saving Normal is an important book that I might suggest to a lay person who had very little knowledge about the DSM and the problem of overdiagnosis. And as a source for understanding "The World According to Allen Frances," it is also valuable. I would not, however, recommend this book to an undergraduate studying this topic, and I would not probably not assign it as reading for an undergraduate course (at least not more than a chapter or two). Most of the important content of this book can also be gathered from reading Frances' blog posts on these topics.

What ever happened to normal mini-breakdowns/recovery in the ups and downs of life?

Great book about the overreaching, overselling and overmedicating of the label bipolar from one of the guys at the very top of the psych field. Very enlightening how fads and mega pharmaceutical lobbying and marketing impact diagnosis and treatment. Frances is just trying to rein it in a little. He's a lone voice in the wilderness. Worth reading to better serve those in your sphere of influence.

About the Author
George M. Marakas is an associate professor of Information Systems at the School of Business at the University of Kansas. His teaching expertise includes Systems Analysis and Design, Technology-Assisted Decision Making, Electronic Commerce, Management of IS Resources, Behavioral IS Research Methods, and Data Visualization and Decision Support. In addition, George is an active researcher in the area of Systems Analysis Methods, Data Mining and Visualization, Creativity Enhancement, Conceptual Data Modeling, and Computer Self-Efficacy. George received his PhD in Information Systems from Florida International University in Miami and his MBA from Colorado State University. Throughout his academic career, George has distinguished himself both through his research and in the classroom. He has received numerous national teaching awards and his research has appeared in the top journals in his field. In addition to this text, he is also the author of three best-selling textbooks in information systems: Decision Support Systems for the 21st Century, Systems Analysis and Design: An Active Approach, and Data Warehousing, Mining, and Visualization: Core Concepts.

I had to get this for a class. It comes as loose leaf bundle of paper that has no resale value.

The authors are stuck in the land that IT forgot. This is an old book with a couple references to "new" technology thrown in to justify a new edition. They talk a lot about mainframes, microcomputer workstations, and modems. A few fun quotes about "Information Appliances" from page 91:

"cellular phones and pagers...promise internet access and the ability to perform basic computational chores."

"the RIM BlackBerry, a small, pager-sized device that can perform all of the common PDA functions, plus act as a fully functional mobile telephone...doesn't even have a visible antenna."

"new entrants to this field...the iPhone essentially combines three products--a revolutionary mobile phone, a wide-screen iPod music and video player..."

I paid $140 for this book to find out that that Apple makes a phone that plays music?

Introduction to information systems

This book is just what it claims to be--an introduction to information systems. There is not a tremendous amount of detail here, but I believe there is enough to give the reader a good idea of the concepts involved. At times, the author does seem to carry on more than is needed, and often you can understand the concept of a chapter very well just by reading the sentences containing the bold words. The best part of the book, in my opinion, is the use of real-world examples, to show how the concepts discussed are being put into use, and how they have benefited real-life companies.
Chances are, if you're buying this book, it's for a college level course. I am a non-business major, and this book was part of a class I took as a general education credit. For this, I think the book is adequate, because it gives a decent introductions into IS without a lot of details. BIS majors, however, will not benefit a great deal from this book, as everything is so basic that it will be of little benefit to someone serious about working with information systems.

Introduction to Information Systems is the book that we are using in my 300 level Business Class in college. I found this book to be well illustrated and informative. It has some information that I have covered in earlier computer classes, but with a litter more in depth knowledge. I have found that the Summary at the end of each Chapter covers the main points, but leaves out some important information. I have found the Review Quiz at the end of each Chapter to be most helpful study tool. The book is well illustrated and contains alot of business examples. I think this is a good book for upper level information systems classes.
