First time author Klaver begins this self-help with a search for archetypes that sets up her refreshing, Jungian take on the emotional potholes that make asking for help a difficult-at times impossible-task. Thoughtful exercises and vignettes guide readers toward an understanding of help as an opportunity "not only to get my needs met but... to be touched by another soul." As such, she looks at what makes asking for help "a universally dreaded endeavor" ("We were never taught how," "We have few models," "We love our independence") and then goes a step further to address the roots of these excuses: fear of surrender, shame and separation. The bulk of the work looks to build confidence in readers by examining each step of the asking process: recognizing the need, getting motivated, formulating the question and going easy on yourself, to name a few. Klaver encourages readers to separate and examine various emotional states, and call on "applied virtues" like self-compassion and faith to transform body, mind and behavior. With lyric, accessible prose, Klaver fleshes out a seemingly narrow topic to provide an unusual angle on human interaction and emotion.

About the Author
M. Nora Klaver is a master coach with twenty years of experience guiding professionals in Fortune 100 companies. While specializing in leadership and organizational development, Klaver has learned that CEO and office assistant alike share similar aspirations and the same kinds of fears. Therefore, she coaches both businesspeople within corporations and individual clients. After earning her master's degree in corporate education, Klaver began her professional career developing training programs for Arthur Anderson, then a Top Six professional services firm. In 1993 she launched her first business, Azay Consulting, providing organizational development services to multinational firms. In 1996, Ms. Klaver founded Inq Inc., Coaching Through Inquiry, a firm dedicated to assisting individuals (in both corporate and non-corporate environments) to achieve personal and professional fulfillment. Her corporate client groups have since included Leo Burnett, Allstate Financial Services and Allstate Insurance, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, NCR Corporation, and Philip Morris USA. Klaver is an active member of the nternational Coach Federation (ICF) and the Association for Spirit at Work (ASAW). Really insightful executive coach - great review from NY Times

I decided to read this book based on a great review I read in the NY Times and her reputation in Chicago as a top executive coach. The premise of the book is that learning to ask for help is not just good for altruistic reasons; it makes business sense. She has some good examples of how asking for help can work to your advantage in getting ahead at work and getting along with your coworkers. She offers some great tips on how to ask for help too. I know people who have worked with this executive coach and rave about her. After working with her and the techniques she shares in this book, they were promoted very quickly. I'm confident the skills I learned through this book will do the same for me. A+++

Important material economically expressed

Picking up M. Nora Klaver's book gave me one of those `ah ha!' moments that I really needed - she addresses the fact that so many of us don't ask for help when we would be far better off if we did. She dares to ask why so many of us behave that way (and I certainly do) and what the ultimate cost of this can be. It's so fundamental it almost takes my breath away that we refuse help so often.

Ms. Klaver's book is brief, but in its delightfully lucid organization it contains a wealth of important material, for the failure to ask for help when we need it isn't just a question of every now and then. It's more like an attitude so many of us have that cuts us off from others, reduces our effectiveness, and locks us into a way of feeling undeserving. This can ultimately make us more helpless than we were before. Fortunately this book gives a clear answer to show us how we can break this pattern. The seven steps in the Mayday process are clearly stated and eye-opening, and the way she writes about applying the virtues of compassion, self-compassion, faith, and gratitude made me see how often the fear of seeming to be in someone else's debt can limit a whole lifetime.

Whether you're in business (where asking for help can be seen as a lack of ability) or starting a new episode in your life, or facing a domestic problem such as caring for children or elders, Mayday will show you a whole new way of handling things. Reading it is like being shown the correct way to do something after years of doing it badly or not at all - suddenly everything makes more sense, and becomes easy.

I found Nora Klaver's stories and advice on asking for help so inspiring, I'm getting copies for a couple of friends and family members who would also benefit from her wisdom and guidance.

I also find her accompanying workbook a great help in identifying where and how I can open up and connect with others by including them in ways of helping me. Doing this seemed impossible at first, but Ms. Klaver brought out the courage and desire to reach out in asking for and appreciating help, which is making a significant difference for me, and for those I've been asking.

Johnson, ``a well-known painter from Kentucky's Appalachian coalfields,'' tells his comical tall tale with a pleasantly brisk lilt and sets it firmly in mountain farm country, outlining the vagrant cow and her vigorous, matronly mistress in authoritative black, dappling the landscape in luminous color, and deftly varying full-page scenes with spreads and vignettes. Funny, Original Story about an Old Farm Woman and her Flying Cow!

I couldn't resist the cover and title of this book at a nearby library, so I checked it out for my three year old. He fell asleep halfway through (he's not feeling well) but I continued reading it aloud. I had to finish it. It's is a great book about a sturdy, no-nonsense old farm woman and her stubborn cow, and the lengths she goes to to bring her cow back when it decides to take flight one day.

Please, find this book and read it to your child. If they think old people are funny, or they like farm animals, or hopefully both, this will tickle their fancy. I have included a picture from the book- not the funniest picture because I don't want to be a spoiler, a good one nonetheless that will give you a feel for this story.

Lastly, I'd like to thank the author. This book is a treasure. Thanks for bringing this book into being.

Children who enjoyed Gertrude’s flying adventures would applaud if the writer/illustrator created a second book about this unusual cow and her wise owner. So would I.

About the Author
Emad Qayed, MD is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Digestive Diseases, Department of Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.
After completing medical training at the University of Jordan in Amman in 2004, Dr. Qayed finished a one-year internship at the Ministry of Health Hospitals in Amman, followed by one year of transitional medicine residency in the King Hussein Cancer Center in Amman, Jordan.

Dr. Qayed completed his medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship training at Emory University in 2012. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Following graduation, he joined the faculty at Emory. In 2013, Dr. Qayed was named by GI fellows as ‘Attending of the Year' in the Division of Digestive Diseases.

Dr. Qayed is a general gastroenterologist who works closely with gastroenterology trainees. He sees a diverse spectrum of patients with gastrointestinal and liver disorders at Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta. Dr. Qayed performs general endoscopic procedures as well as therapeutic ERCP, enteral stenting and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR).

A member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterology Association, and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Dr. Qayed is currently enrolled in the MPH program at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.

The book is easy to read

Well written book. I used this book throughout my GI fellowship, and found it high yield academically and clinically. The book is easy to read, while offering a comprehensive review of various GI conditions. There are management algorithms and tables to guide patient care. It provides a quick summary of the landmark studies which every gastroenterologist should know. The most novel feature of this book are the QR codes. The QR codes provide easy access to major society guidelines and landmark GI studies. There also QR codes to videos highlighting various endoscopic findings and procedures. I would highly recommend this book to all GI fellows to enhance their training experience.

The first "modern" GI book for 21st century:

This is a well written book. It's full of clinical information for day to day GI and hepatology practice. Obviously, there is no discussion about pathophysiology or basic science stuff. Every single line in this book is clinically relevant.
The most important advantage of this book is the extensive use of QR codes that can be scanned by smartphone to access online contents. Each section has a QR code that directs the reader to the corresponding guidelines. There are QR codes for procedures which directs the reader to online videos.
Although this book can be used for board review, it's not sufficient for that purpose.

Outstanding book. High yield, concise, easy to read. Useful tables and flow charts. I found it to be a great resource in fellowship, and I am using it now for board review. The QR codes that link to both guidelines and landmark papers are really helpful as well.

I would recommend this book- it's very useful.

Very informative book. If you want to know about herbs, and what causes sicknesses, and how to get well, then you will like this book. The author is getting her information from John Lee (that's who she is interviewing in the book). He is a known healer and medicine maker. He has made speeches at the Smithsonian Institute as well.

Good but too light on details

The book contains numerous techniques and is fairly good at describing them at a high level, however that's about as much as this book is good for. If you want to know in-depth about the techniques then look elsewhere since this book, by design, does not get into the nitty gritty as much as would be needed to really understand and implement the techniques listed. Still, a very handy resource to have in your bookshelf.

Great book for Business Analysis

I bought this book along with its companion "Business Analysis" and love both of them. I was recently transitioned into a new business analysis role at work and bought a lot of books and did a lot of research on my new role. This book is by far the best out there. The material is presented clearly and it's very easy to follow. They have some great template examples and really help you understand each step of the business analysis process. I highly recommend this book to any business analyst... new or seasoned.

Solid Business Analysis Framework and Field Manual

Reviewing this book in the context of it being one of the 11 books recommended to read to prepare for the PM-PBA, book 1 or 11. The book proposes a life-cycle Business Analysis from; Business Strategy and Objectives, Investigate Situation, Consider Perspectives, Analyze Needs, Evaluate Options, to Define Requirements. The Authors then create a framework by laying 99 techniques into the framework at various stages.

It is an interesting approach, and probably a curative to many of the poorly designed portfolios, programs, and projects when helping to guide the hands of an experienced practitioner. The novice to intermediate practitioner might find the lack of detail on techniques frustrating, this is more of a BA Field Manual than a "How To". Found this book expensive but liked it. Encyclopedic feel. I will use it professionally.
