Disappointed. No change from 5th edition.

Very disappointed. The only change from this edition from the previous one is the inclusion of a "free book". It's just two model literature reviews printed. We don't need this kind of gimmick. We can find thousands of literature reviews online! I felt I insulted. I had looked forward to see more updates but was let down. It does not justify the $60 price tag at all. The quality of the printing and organization of the book is so old fashioned and outmoded. The book should be charge at $20. Please consider carefully before buying it. The knowledge is good but the changes in the different editions is very minimal. I remember reading the first edition. It had similar knowledge. I liked it very much but the author and publisher don't seem very genuine in improving the book. I feel that they just want to make money out of it. But not seriously interested in the pursuit of finding the best methods to do the literature review.

About the Author

Robert M. Malina, PhD, FACSM, earned a doctoral degree in physical education from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a doctoral degree in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia. He earned honorary degrees from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium and the Academy of Physical Education, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. He was a professor of kinesiology and anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin from 1967 to 1995 and then moved to a similar position in kinesiology and anthropology at Michigan State University. Dr. Malina retired from Michigan State University in the summer of 2002. He currently is a research professor at Tarleton State University at Stephenville, Texas, and a research associate at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Michigan State University.

Professor Malina served as editor in chief of the American Journal of Human Biology (1990-2002), editor of the Yearbook of Physical Anthropology (1980-1986), and section editor for growth and development for Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews (1981-1999) and Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport (1981-1993). He also serves on the editorial boards of 13 journals in the sport sciences and biological anthropology.

His primary area of interest is the biological growth and maturation of children and adolescents with a focus on performance, youth sports and young athletes, and the potential influences of physical activity and training for sport. He has also worked extensively with the anthropometric correlates of physique and body composition in female athletes at the university level. Related areas of interest are the role of physical activity in the well being of children, adolescents, and young adults and the influence of chronic undernutrition on the growth, performance, and physical activity of Latin American youth.

Claude Bouchard, PhD, FACSM, is the executive director of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center and the George A. Bray chair in nutrition. He holds a BPed from Laval University, an MSc in exercise physiology from the University of Oregon at Eugene, and a PhD in population genetics from the University of Texas at Austin. His research deals with the genetics of adaptation to exercise and to nutritional interventions as well as the genetics of obesity and its comorbidities. He has authored or coauthored several books and more than 800 scientific papers. He received the Honor Award from the Canadian Association of Sport Sciences in 1988 and 2002, a Citation Award from the American College of Sports Medicine in 1992, the Benjamin Delessert Award in nutrition in France in 1993, the Willendorf Award from the International Association for the Study of Obesity in 1994, the Sandoz Award from the Canadian Atherosclerosis Society in 1996, the Albert Creff Award in Nutrition from the National Academy of Medicine of France in 1997, the TOPS award from the North American Association for the Study of Obesity in 1998, the W. Henry Sebrell Award from the Weight Watchers Foundation in 1999, and of an honorary doctoral degree in science from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1998. He has been a foreign member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium since 1996 and was the Leon Mow visiting professor at the International Diabetes Institute in Melbourne in 1998. In 2001, he became a member of the Order of Canada as well as professor emeritus of the faculty of medicine at Laval University. Dr. Bouchard is a former president of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity and the president of the International Association for the Study of Obesity (2002-2006). Prior to coming to Pennington, he held the Donald B. Brown research chair on obesity at Laval University.

The late Oded Bar-Or, MD, FACSM, was a professor of pediatrics and founder and director of the Children's Exercise and Nutrition Centre at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His 35-year research and clinical career focused on the effects of physical activity and inactivity on the health, well-being, and performance of healthy children and those with disease. During his career, he served as president of the Canadian Association of Sports Sciences, vice president of the American College of Sports Medicine, and president of the International Council for Physical Fitness Research. In 2000, the University of Blaise Pascal in France awarded him an honorary doctorate degree. He also received the Honor Award of the North American Society for Pediatric Medicine in 1998 and the Citation Award of the ACSM in 1997.

You gotta love Bertha. I do!....

Such a charming story for Bertha whose heart is soft, her personality is sweet and her talents in the kitchen are amazing. She wants to find the love of her life, yet she is surrounded with a house full of siblings. Her brothers are looking for wives and her sisters are busy with many beaus. This romantic life in her parents home leaves shy Bertha on the sidelines watching others have fun. Bertha doesn't have the 18 inch waist that is preferred, so she hides when visitors arrive. Where is her future and who can she find that will accept her as she is. She travels to Montana to accept a job as cook and manager of a Boarding House. She quite literally falls out of the wagon and lands in the arms of Howie Brungar, the handyman. While she is embarrassed to near tears, Howie loves every moment he holds this wonderful woman he just met. We fans asked this author to give us a book about Bertha and it is a grand story. I enjoyed every moment of this book.

Grand Finale to a Great Series!

I was able to get through this book quickly, because I was entertained and didn't put it down!

This was a great finale to the Mail-Order Brides of the West series! Bertha, the chef and baker extraordinaire, is the heroine this time. She remains without a match as Mrs. Seymour decides to close down the agency and finds herself back home with her lovely sisters grabbing all the attention of suitors.

I really enjoyed this installment, mainly because Bertha takes even greater risks than the other brides: She leaves home and goes to Montana without a husband waiting for her & she accepts a job offer from none other than Prudence, the woman who tormented her at the agency.

It was nice to see the other brides make an appearance here, but I especially liked witnessing a new side of Prudence. Beauty is on the inside, and Bertha is a great example of this.

I won't give away the rest, but I think readers of this series and of Ms. Holland's Montana Sky books will not be disappointed.

Debra has written another wonderful and awesome story for the Mail Order Brides of the West series.

Bertha is another great Mail Order Bride story in Montana by Debra Holland. Her Montana Sky series has another part with her Mail Order Brides of the West. Bertha is the last bride to leave the bridal agency and didn't have a match. Her nemesis Prudence who was the second to last to leave went to Morgan's Crossing and became the town owner's bride. Prudence was always very mean to Bertha but one day Bertha gets a letter from Prudence with an offer to come to Morgan's Crossing to be the cook and run the boarding house there.
This story is amazing at how things turn out and not at all what Bertha expected to find when she got there. You have to read her story as it has new chances, redemption , new friends and old friends and of course love.
This is another must read by Debra Holland and if you haven't read any of the Montana Sky stories or the Mail Order Brides of the west, you should start there to know what was going on.
Thank you Debra Holland for another awesome story.

About the Author

Debra Geoghan is a professor of computer and information science at Bucks County Community College, teaching computer classes ranging from basic computer literacy to cybercrime, computer forensics, and networking. She has certifications from Microsoft, CompTIA, Apple, and others. Deb has taught at the college level since 1996 and also spent 11 years in the high school classroom. She holds a B.S. in Secondary Science Education from Temple University and an M.A. in Computer Science Education from Arcadia University. Throughout her teaching career Deb has worked with educators to integrate technology across the curriculum. At BCCC she serves on many technology committees, presents technology workshops for BCCC faculty, and serves as the computer science coordinator. Deb is an avid user of technology, which has earned her the nickname “gadget lady.”
