Each book is refreshingly frank, offering a "warts and all" portrait. Celebrated as a national hero, da Gama opened up a new trade route to the Indies and enabled his country to profit hugely from the spice trade. He also mercilessly killed Muslims and responded to disobedience with brutality. Born more than 60 years before da Gama, Prince Henry was renowned for encouraging and enabling the Portuguese to mount expeditions in hopes of finding a sea route to India. His fervent Christianity was of the crusading sort, aiming to convert by colonizing Muslim cities in North Africa and by selling Africans into slavery. With narrow margins and a blurry knotted-rope-motif decoration, the format is a bit crowded. However, the illustrations include many excellent period paintings, prints, and maps, all clearly reproduced in color. Back matter includes a chronology, a bibliography, and a list of museums. Chad is enamored of Kara, but because she is not a Christian, he can't see a future with her. Chad's devoted family assistant, Flora, goes undercover as the housemother to evaluate the girls' potential for the variety show and as a potential friend for Chad, and the relationship Kara forms with her is central to the plot development. Many people will root for Kara's conversion to Christianity and watch it unfold in an organic way. This story is well paced and easy to read. Scripts from Kara's many auditions are included. In general, this novel provides moral guidelines for youngsters in an increasingly reality-TV-filled world. Must Read!!

Kara McKormick wants to be a star! She's a seventeen-year-old girl who is known for being a contestant on "The Book of Love" which you can read about in Krista's first novel, "First Date". In this novel, Kara tries out for a variety show, "Teens Rock". Unbeknownst to the ten girls who are competing against each other, they must impress their housemother, Flora. When "America's Next Star", Chad Beacon, decides to take on acting, his parents demand his co-star be a Christian, Flora, their assistant, poses as the girls' housemother. This was such an amazing book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! There was more to this novel than the average "follow your dreams"; the story had a clear, Christian message, and I loved that Krista wasn't afraid to express Christianity in this novel. I also loved the relationships in this novel: Kara & Addy, Kara & Chad, Chad & Jonathon, and Addy & Jonathon). Despite the fact that this novel was loosely based on the story of Issac and Rebekah in Genesis 24, it wasn't overly relegious; it was still fun, enjoyable, and showcased struggles without jamming one's beliefs down your throat. I love reading a good Christian book every once in awhile, because it relaxes, strengthens, and grounds me; it's a reminder of my faith. I think everyone should read this novel, even if you're not a believer; it puts things in perspective for you!

In the World Starring Me?

My most recent selection from Book Sneeze is Starring Me, a fictional young adult novel written by Krista McKee. This book is the follow up to First Date, although each is its own unique story. The characters cross over, but Starring Me is its own story.

Kara is a young, hopeful, wanna be actress who is selected to be one of 10 girls to "audition" for a variety show. The exact details of the show, including the costar, are kept secret from the girls trying out.

The exact details revolve around Chad - the latest winner of an American Idol type show who, after only a year, is already tired of the teen heartthrob lifestyle. When he and his parents are pitched the idea for a variety show, they set some ground rules of their own. Chad's parents insist their son's costar must be a Christian, desiring the girl to be uplifting to his spiritual walk.

For me, the book was only meh. The story line didn't contain twists, turns, or anything surprising/exciting. It was a quick read, and I enjoyed the author's writing style. I think its unfair of me to expect a novel for teens
to be as complex as others I read, but I found the predictability a bit tired.

This book could be a great spring board, however, for the "in the world but not of the world discussion." Should we surround ourselves with Christians lest we be tempted to stray? I don't agree with the position taken by the parents (and presumably the author) but is certainly a topic worth talking about.

Must Read!

Thank you to Thomas Nelson for sending me this e-galley through their Book Sneeze program. Starring Me is a fun, refreshing read about a girl as feisty as her red hair, a cute boy and the chance of a lifetime. This story is loosely based on the biblical story of Issac and Rebekah and is a companion novel to McGee's debut, First Date, (where we first meet Kara).

Kara McCormick was born to perform and while she didn't win the boy on The Book of Love, she came away with an even better prize in her new best friend Addy. The girls have a lot in common but the one thing they don't share is Addy's belief in God. Kara doesn't see the need for Him in her life even though she's seen Him work in Addy's. All that changes when Kara gets the chance to audition for a new teen sketch comedy show, convinced it's her ticket to making her dreams come true. When things don't go as smoothly as she expected, she'll discover that God works in our lives whether we acknowledge Him or not. Kara also gets a lesson about what's really important and the meaning of real love - the kind that's all consuming and never ending.

I thoroughly enjoyed Kara! She's straightforward, selfless and laugh-out-loud funny. She shows integrity and an openness to what Addy and several others have to say. There's a sweetness to the friendship she develops with Chad and parents of younger readers have nothing to worry about. The idea of courtship; not dating until you're serious about finding a lifelong partner is addressed with Kara and Addy discussing the pros and cons of bouncing from one relationship to the next.

Krista McGee is one of the few Christian authors I've found who is able to share a message of love, forgiveness and grace without sounding preachy or cheesy. McGee's characters are believable and relateable. I'm a Christian and I don't enjoy reading stories where everything is over the top or with characters who are too "perfect".

The Only Book You'll Need to Save Your Skin (and pocket)

A must-have for every beauty enthusiast who spends thousands of dollars just to look for the next miracle cream because the last one didn't do what it was claimed to.
Written clearly and with a sense of humour The Beauty Bible is literally a bible, explaining with details all the 'You Shalt' and 'You Shalt Not' in cosmetics, including all the hype ingredients, what to do to really have a better skin (it works, I bought her products) and how to prevent future damage. The book also includes a How-To makeup section.
The best part in the book is reading how we are fed with lies by the salespeople and cosmetics companies. I was amazed!
I will never look at the beauty industry the same.

I wish I had this book when I was younger...sound skin care advice.

Reading this book and her other book, Don't go to the cosmetics counter without me, has completely changed how I care for my skin. The author's advice is very practical, realistic, and sane. My skin is clearer, looks much nicer, and feels comfortable for the first time since I was under the age of 10. I remember having dermatologists (yes, actual medical doctors) prescibe harsh bar soaps for cleansing, irritating creams and lotions, and not making any mention of sun protection. It's no wonder I couldn't get my face to clear up! I've probably used every product marketed towards combination skin or acne-prone skin, and none of it has helped. By reading this book, I now understand what I was doing wrong and have put together a skin care routine that actually works. It's just amazing.

Some reviewers have tried to portray this book as a pro-plastic surgery, pro-chemical products, anti-nature, ill-informed rant, but that really couldn't be further from the truth. Paula Begoun is a consumer advocate and is trying to stop people from swallowing all the marketing nonsense that the cosmetics industry feeds us. She's also trying to help people have realistic expectations for what skin care products can do for you. No cream, toner, or serum can remove wrinkles, so she explains that if you really want to remove wrinkles, plastic surgery may be your only option. It's better to know that than to keep wasting tons and tons of money on supposed "miracle" products. She also is trying to debunk another myth the cosmetics industry feeds us, that "natural" equals "good". Look at products like Origins, Aveda, etc. that claim to be "natural" solutions -- they contain miniscule amounts of "natural" extracts and all the same chemicals that all other products have. She's not advocating dousing yourself in chemicals -- she's advocating not buying into the lies these companies use to sell you products.

At any rate, I highly recommend this book to anyone who's ever had trouble with their skin and has tried everything under the sun to improve it. Granted, not every recommendation she makes will work for you, but the bottom line is that with her advice, you can make much, much smarter choices for yourself.

Elements from "Red Riding Hood" and Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland have the strongest presence with possible nods to "Goldilocks" and the less-known tale of the "Twelve Months." Kikko chases through the woods after her father with a pie for Grandma. Finding herself outside a different house, she joins a tea party. When her animal hosts hear that her pie had been crushed, they assemble an assorted dessert and parade with her to Grandma's house before disappearing. The translated text seems a bit flat and stilted in comparison to the fresh story concept and the pacing tends to lag at times, occasionally pausing on uninspired dialogue. Overall, the illustrations work well in some aspects and fall short in others. With a blend of realism and surrealism, Miyakoshi's style is reminiscent of Anthony Browne. The texture of the charcoal on paper gives the dark trees of the forest a wavery roughness as the author-illustrator artfully creates a barren landscape with the adept use of value, white space, and perspective. Although the stark bleakness makes sense for the outdoor scenes and Miyakoshi's tender grayness fits the real-life frame, the tea party scenes have a static, dusty quality for example, when the animals stare upon the newcomer through what might be described as a dry haze. With the restraint of the monochromatic palette and spot color, the wildly shifting perspective feels unnecessarily dramatic. The greatest disappointment may be that Kikko's minimal facial features occasionally read as inappropriately cross, comical, or smug, suggesting that perhaps more than just words are lost in the translation. You'll never walk alone

There are picture books out there that feel like short films. Some of the time they’re adapted into them (as with “The Snowman” or “The Lost Thing” or “Lost and Found”) and sometimes they’re made in tandem (“The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore”). And some of the time you know, deep in your heart of hearts, that they will never see the silver screen. That they will remain perfect little evocative pieces that seep deep into the softer linings of a child’s brain, changing them, affecting them, and remaining there for decades in some form. “The Tea Party in the Woods” is like that. It looks on first glance like what one might characterize to be a “quiet” book. Upon further consideration, however, it is walking the tightrope between fear and comfort. We are in safe hands from the start to the finish but there’s no moment when you relax entirely. In this strangeness we find a magnificent book.

Having snowed all night, Kikko’s father takes off through the woods to shovel out the walk of her grandmother. When he forgets to bring along the pie Kikko’s mother baked for the occasion, Kikko takes off after him. She knows the way but when she spots him in the distance she smashes the pie in her excitement. Catching up, there’s something strange about her father. He enters a house she’s never seen before. Upon closer inspection, the man inside isn’t a man at all but a bear. A sweet lamb soon invites Kikko in, and there she meets a pack of wild animals, all polite as can be and interested in her. When she confesses to having destroyed her grandmother’s cake, they lend her slices of their own, and then march her on her way with full musical accompaniment.

Part of what I like so much about this book is that when a kid reads it they’re probably just taking it at face value. Girl goes into woods, hangs out with clothed furry denizens, and so on, and such. Adults, by contrast, are bringing to the book all sorts of literary, cinematic, and theatrical references of their own. A girl entering the woods with red on her head so as to reach her grandmother’s reeks of Little Red Riding Hood (and I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of a wolf at the tea party). The story of a girl wandering into the woods on her own and meeting the wild denizens who live there for a feast makes the book feel like a best case fairy encounter scenario. In this light the line, “You’re never alone in the woods”, so comforting here, takes on an entirely different feel. Some have mentioned comparisons to Alice in Wonderland as well, but the tone is entirely different. This is more akin to the meal with the badgers in “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” than anything Lewis Carroll happened to cook up.

Yet it is the art that is, in many ways, the true allure. Kirkus compared the art to both minimalist Japanese prints as well as Dutch still life’s. Miyakoshi does indeed do marvelous things with light, but to my mind it’s the use of color that’s the most impressive. Red and yellow and the occasional hint of orange/peach appear at choice moments. Against a sea of black and white they draw your eye precisely to where it needs to go. That said, I felt it was Miyakoshi’s artistic choices that impressed me most. Nowhere is this more evident than when Kikko enters the party for the first time, every animal in the place staring at her. It’s a magnificent image. The best in the book by far. Somehow, Miyakoshi was able to draw this scene in such a way where the expressions on the animals’ faces are ambiguous. It isn’t just that they are animals. First and foremost, it seems clear that they are caught entirely unguarded in Kikko’s presence. The animals that had been playing music have stopped mid-note. And I, an adult, looked at this scene and (as I mentioned before) applied my own interpretation on how things could go. While it would be conceivable for Kikko to walk away from the party unscathed, in the hands of another writer she could easily have ended up the main course. That is probably why Miyakoshi follows up that two-page spread (which should have been wordless, but that’s neither here nor there) with an immediate scene of friendly, comforting words and images. The animals not only accept Kikko’s presence, they welcome her, are interested in her, and even help her when they discover her plight (smashing her grandmother’s pie). Adults everywhere who have found themselves unaccompanied (and even uninvited) at parties where they knew no one, and will recognize in this a clearly idyllic, unapologetically optimistic situation. In other words, perfect picture book fodder.

Translation is a delicate art. Done well, it creates some of our greatest children’s literature masterpieces. Done poorly and the book just melts away from the publishing world like mist, as if it was never there. Because I do not have a final copy of this book in hand, I don’t know if the translator for this book is ever named. Whoever they are, I think they knew precisely how to tackle it. Originally published in what I believe to be Japan, I marvel even now at how the story opens. The first line reads, “That morning, Kikko had awoken to a winter wonderland.” We are plunged into the story in such as way as to believe that we’ve been reading about Kikko for quite some time. It doesn’t say “One morning”, which is a distinction of vast importance. It says “That morning” and we are left to consider why that choice was made. What happened before “That morning” that led up to the events of this particular day? Whole short stories have been conjured from less. I love it.

If none of the reasons I’ve mentioned do it for you, consider this: On the cover of this book perches a squirrel in a bright red party dress in the crook of a tree. Tiny squirrel. Tiny red flowing gown. A detail you might easily miss the first ten times you read this book but it is there and just makes the book for me. Add in the tone, the light, the mood, and the writing itself and you have a book that will be remembered long after the name has faded from its readers’ minds. Something about this book will stick with your kids for all time. If you want something that feels classic and safely dangerous, Miyakoshi’s book is a rare piece of comfortable animal noir. No one is alone in the woods and after this book no one would want to be.

Beautiful Charcoals Carry This Evocative Tale

We follow Kikko through wintry woods to a warm and comfy tea party with unusual but very welcoming guests. The books starts with chilly scenes of winter that are captured perfectly by Miyakoshi's spare charcoal lines accented by welcome bits of expressive color. Then we enter the odd world of the mystery tea party and the drawings, (now nicely colored where appropriate), manage to convey just the right sense of awe, excitement, surprise, and good cheer.

Anthropomorphic animals are so very hard to get right, and if they don't work then the story never takes off. Here, the characters are true to their animal forms, but still perfectly inviting and "real" as characters. When this is coupled with the spare landscapes and the understated but upbeat mood, well, you end up with a book that works as a story and that works as a picture book.

The upshot is that this struck me as a mellow, atmospheric treat just right for a winter afternoon and a cup of cocoa. A nice find.

Curious and spare, but appealing

A girl runs into the woods after her father carrying the pie he has forgotten to take to her grandmother. She falls in the snow and ruins the pie. But then she finds an odd tea party of animals from the woods. They invite her to join them, and are kind to her. They contribute pieces of pie to take to her grandmother.

The illustrations are mostly black and white, with some having just a touch of color. The story is simple, but appropriate for a little one. Something a bit different, and worth looking into.
