Great book with great incites!

This book was very helpful for me, as a woman looking to get back in the dating world. Lily Love's book is honest yet understanding towards women, and offers genuinely good advice from the female perspective. I was worried that I would read this and be asked to follow a bunch of rules that would change who I essentially am but it's not the case. This book gives practical, factual advice that I can follow while still maintaining a strong sense of self while dating. And not only does it explain what men want, but how you have to be happy in yourself first. Great book with great incites! Makes you think about all the things we as women do wrong and why we don't succeed with men.

Keep your relationship!

This book was a great reminder for me as a married woman. I love my husband and I always want to keep our relationship burning and keep him attracted to me from now till we grow old together. The points discussed in this book were very valid to form a solid relationship . The author touched on tops such as looking good and walk around with an air of confidence which is sexy to men, love him , maintain a friendship, listen to him , respect him and definitely spice things up. This is a great relationship guide. I highly recommend !

Oh how I wish this book delivers!

I work as a solo pianist and about to create my own quartet so I have to be serious about comping. My knowledge about comping is limited to one chapter in Mark Levine's Jazz Piano Book. I'm always curious of the voicings of heavy and thick sound of parallel chords you hear played by great jazz pianists. The very sound that has been haunting me since the first time I heard the seductive sound of cool jazz.

So I made a research and found that there aren't many books specializing on jazz piano comping. This one has the exact title I'm looking for, and it's coming from the famous Berklee School of Music. I figured from the quality of other Berklee Press books that I own, this probably wouldn't disappoint me. You know, I really really wanted this book to work so bad, to lead the way for me. I've been so longing to find out how to be a great comper. But because this was a very new book when I bought it, it had very little information about it on the net. The book wasn't even listed on the Berklee Press website itself. I only managed to find the author's website and listened to few of her audio and video which didn't show much of her comping, so it didn't help me to decide. I wish I knew what's in it. Now, about the content itself:

I started by listening to the last few tracks of the CD, a habit of mine when picking up new instructional music book that has a CD attached, hoping to know how I will sound like by the time I finish the book... Ouch! Didn't like it at all. Didn't sound nowhere near the professional level. But! I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, let alone the last few tracks of the CD, so I read through it and listened to every single track of the CD. I have to say the material on jazz comping presented is relatively basic (plus a bit of Blues) if you've read Levine's book (he delves much deeper on the book's topics), and I couldn't find anything standing out that I couldn't find on Levine's book. The only thing I like about the book is the usual and great teaching methodology of Berklee Press, but sadly, the content itself is not a great teaching. Definitely will not guide you to be at the level when you can use it in a professional setting.

One thing that I don't like at all is the comping rhythm that the author plays on throughout the whole book and CD as examples. It is unbelievably and horribly simple, especially for someone who has the rank of an associate professor. Of course, you have to start slow and simple if you're teaching people. But eventually you have to share the good stuff too. Gosh, you just have to listen to the CD to find out. Almost all examples are using 3 or 4-note LH voicing with simple syncopated rhythm. I mean, I admit I don't know how to comp, but my rhythm is definitely more varied than hers. I refuse to believe that this is all she knows and can do on comping, so I question her motive of just writing a book for the sake of it, or actually willing to share what she knows about jazz comping. At the end of the book, my comping has not improved and I'm still confused about and longing for that mellow, upper register, parallel chords that the professionals use. Another miss on my pursuit of professional voicing.

I would only recommend this book if you are early in your jazz piano playing. If you know your 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths, and you can play II-V-I in the circle of 5ths, this book will take you to the next level of understanding tensions, upper structures, and fourth voicing. You won't get much more.

The bottom line is, if you want to be closer to comping like Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner and the likes, this will not lead the way for you.

Any suggestion for alternative or how you professionals out there learn to comp will be greatly appreciated.

This book is very well structured and helped me make the transition from simple comping patterns to the jazz sound that I'm looking for. It has a practical approach that gets you started immediately, and also includes a CD that helps you gauge yourself along the way. Even halfway through the book, I was able to comp with a bass and drums using really cool jazz voicings for two hands.

I got the chance to purchase the book , one year ago . I never considered myself a Jazz Pianist, so in order to improve my aprroach to Jazz , i purchased this Book. The Book covers a large variety of voicings , for Jazz Music , but also you can move this voicings to other Musical Generes. Specially R&B and funk. Great Book to learn Quartal Voicings and Comping Rhythms. Since I start studying this book , My Jazz vocabulary really improve , strongolly recommed this Book to anyone who wants to learn and have a good foundation of Jazz. Also got the chance to hear play the author and she really knew her stuff.

Dr. Marks has done great work in creating a handbook for the primary care provider anywhere on the globe to develop the core skills to use ultrasound for common diagnostic dilemmas. This book is clearly designed for use in the office or emergency setting where rapid diagnosis is important, especially when a radiologist is not available or when your clinical question is straightforward.

The pages are filled with images - and are easy to comprehend pairing of images with one of them outlining the structures that allows the reader to see the clean image and understand the anatomy better. I highly recommend this book for the clinician who wants to develop their US skills and provide a higher level of diagnostic accuracy for their patients without having to send them out of the office. A Practical Approach for clinicians

This recently published textbook is ideally suited to the clinician - physician, nurse practioner or midwife who is begining to use Ultrasound for patient diagnosis in the office or clinic. Emphasis is placed on identfying those conditions that require referral for either a confirmatory diagnosis or for surgical intervention. More than 8o pages of this 176 page book are devoted to obstetric diagnosis, where Ultrasound is at its life saving best.
The format is very user friendly with parallel sets of images with those on the right highlighting the anatomy or pathology seen on the screen image.
Dr Marks' practical approach to Ultrasound is a great addition to moving the use of Ultrasound beyond the radiologist and contributing to its achieving its rightful role as the stethoscope of the 21st century.

Great Resource for Primary Care Docs

This book is perfect for those of us who practice primary care medicine. Each organ system is covered in a concise, practical and readable manner. The book provides insight and understanding of the capability and methodology of ultrasound without going into boring details of interest only to ultrasonographers. The illustrations are clear with explanations that are easy to understand. I'm sure the information I gathered in reading this book will be of great value in ordering ultrasound studies and intepreting their results.

Good read, amateur assembly

The read was really interesting. The images, however, left something to be desired. Using fan art to demonstrate popularity is alright, but to use it as accompaniment to more scholarly text does not look good. Also, the fact that all images were pretty low res was disappointing for how nice the book was.

An interesting insight into the quirky, yet completely normal life of Twinkle Khanna.

Before I begin, I must admit to 2 things -

1. I like Twinkle Khanna - nope, not as an actress (she was a terrible one!) or even as a person (because I clearly don’t know her!). I like her in her columnist avatar; that is my most favorite version of her. I say most favorite version, because she is/has been many things - star-child turned actress turned candle maker turned columnist turned author. Phew!
2. I have a hard time thinking of this as a book - to me, it’s a collection of articles or blog posts or journal entries...maybe. Anything, but not a book. This is not necessarily a good or a bad thing; just my perception of it. Having said that, for the lack of a better description, I’ll stick with ‘book’ for now.

Mrs Funny Bones - the book, is narrated Mrs FunnyBones - Twinkle Khanna’s alter-ego (or so she says). I read this book in one-sitting (3 hours) - a feat I haven't performed in the past few years - not because it is an unputdownable, flawless, literary gem, but only because it is a fast, quick read.

It reads like several journal entries, and is mostly a narration of scattered, unimportant things that happen in her life, which are not exactly interesting, but her ready wit ensures that they are not boring either.

I must also mention that this book is not a showcase of the glittering life of a superstar's wife. On the contrary, it is an insider look into the quirky, yet completely normal life of Twinkle Khanna - the mother, wife, daughter and entrepreneur.

Big Expectations:

To be honest, I had big expectations from this book. Mostly because, I have read several of her articles, and have really enjoyed them. She is sassy, sarcastic, and has a great sense of humour, which reflects in her writing.

Then came the title, and cover release, and I loved them too. Even after reading the book, I feel that the title and the cover work very well. They stand out, and also convey the mood of the book.

A (little) Disappointing Reality:

Having said what I have said, this book did not quite meet my expectations. Admittedly, the expectations were pretty big to begin with, but it’s not just that.

A beautiful book to make your life hard moments bearable

I will be honest I did not know that Mrs Khanna did write Blogs. My wife showed me this book and mentioned that it is good.
I did by this book (no piracy :)) for my wife and not for me.
She did not read it and i wanted a light read so picked this up.
I was surprised, I would never have thought the Twinkle Khanna , the movie star could write so beautifully.

Getting humor into any aspect of life (write , talk, act) is very difficult. but the way she has got humor us marvelous. The small anecdotes of life and making it hilarious , hats off to you.

I loved the small snippets where she talks about her husband and mother.
The Prodigal son reminds me of any kid you can see.

A good book, keep it with you , for the moments when you are feeling low about your life. This will make those moments lighter.

Mrsfunnybones is a quick and funny read. The author is born and brought up in high society bollywood so shows off her status in many instances. She makes the most mundane incidents/situations sound really hilarious. It is one of those late evening reads that you finish in an hour and a half.
