Master of Emotion: A Journeyman Piece

YA speculative fiction isn't usually my thing (I usually go for meatier fare), but I've been devouring a lot of different books lately and the premise of this plot seemed intriguing. I confess, once I got to the action sequences, I couldn't put it down until the climax resolved. Unfortunately, that was 4:30am.

Ms. Huff does a pretty good job of capturing the emotional walls built up by an isolated teenager, as well as his starvation for human contact and blossoming of character when he finally connects with someone he trusts. I also liked the camaraderie between Beau and his twin brother, Bryce, his lifeline to humanity until Rose helps him break out of his shell.

The premise is familiar, although the treatment is well-done. I liked this book and look forward to reading the sequel, Supreme Chancellor of Stupidity.

Excellent Bible Study

This series contains the audio from class lectures by Dr. Bill Creasy.

Dr. Creasy covers each book verse-by-verse, providing context to the material by explaining other passages in the Bible that may relate to a passage under study, with descriptions of corresponding historical events and the geography and their relationship to the passage, as well as anecdotes from his travels or study. I find it extremely helpful to study the Bible in context with geography and history.

As explained in the opening lesson on Genesis, this study starts with Genesis in the Old Testament, then moves to Matthew in the New Testament, then Exodus and Leviticus in the Old Testament, then back to Mark in the New Testament, and so on. Dr. Creasy does this because 1) if covered in weekly segments, as done in his class, it would be in year 5 before he got to Matthew, and 2) to help show the relationship between Old Testament and New Testament.

According to the syllabus I received from Dr. Creasy (he sometimes deviates from this in class), Isaiah is the forty-first in the Logos Bible Study series, preceded by Titus and followed by Jeremiah. Isaiah has 66 chapters, and the study is comprised of 12 lessons. Total time - 8 hours, 38 minutes.

His argument is based on in-depth ethnographic research in the southernmost region of India, where hereditary medico-martial practitioners learn their occupation from relatives or skilled gurus through an esoteric, spiritual education system. Rituals of secrecy and apprenticeship in varmakkalai are among the important focal points of Sieler's study. Practitioners protect their esoteric knowledge, but they also engage in a kind of "lure and withdrawal"---a performance of secrecy---because secrecy functions as what might be called "symbolic capital." Sieler argues that varmakkalai is, above all, a matter of texts in practice; knowledge transmission between teacher and student conveys tacit, non-verbal knowledge, and constitutes a "moral economy." It is not merely plain facts that are communicated, but also moral obligations, ethical conduct and tacit, bodily knowledge.

About the Author

Roman Sieler has a PhD in cultural anthropology from South Asia Institute, Heidelberg University (2011). His research interests include siddha medicine and the transmission and practice of non-institutionalized forms of health care in India, especially bonesetting and other forms of manual medicine. Currently, Sieler is Assistant Professor of anthropology at the South Asia Institute, where he coordinates the MA program "Health and Society in South Asia." He is also an affiliate postdoctoral researcher at the French Institute of Pondicherry, India.

Book has more value than just in class

This book actually does quite a good job at explaining major concepts in capital markets. I initially bought it for a class on the subject with the intention of selling it later. However, I've kept it for future reference as I progress in my career.

It really is more expensive than it should be though.

There is a very through examination of the issues of risk and uncertainty made in this book as it is related to financial and money markets .However, there is an inaccuracy on pp.30-31 with respect to the views of J M Keynes.The author states that "...Keynes made a similar distinction (note-the author is referring to Frank Knight),arguing that there is risk that can be calculated and another sort of risk he labeled "irreducible uncertainty"."
Keynes never ever used the term " irreducible uncertainty" at any point in any of his published work. Uncertainty is not another kind of risk. Uncertainty means that the risk can't be calculated because there is a substantial information missing .Keynes dealt with this by following george Boole .He developed a Boolean approach based on indeterminate probabilities or interval valued probability in the TP. Knight never developed any technical approach to deal with uncertainty
