Reading Fletcher's books is like reading James Michener

As with all the books in this series it is well written, very readable and held my attention throughout. Reading Fletcher's books is like reading James Michener. I wish there were many more books in the saga. I loved each and every one of them. I feel I learned about Australia and the Outback through the books. The characters are well delineated and the stories are eminently readable.

Wallaby Track

This is a strange book. I don't really know how to grade it. It was very long, and except for the death of Stephanie' s father all the main characters were beautiful, talented, smart, wonderful people to the second and third generation. What really bothered me ( disclaimer on the plot ) was that, on one hand, Stephanie believed in God and salvation, but also believed that God would condemn her father's soul to eternally be in torment because he happened to be killed while attending a patient at that prison. That reasoning turned me off, and I jumped through many sections of the book. While the book didn't dwell on this fact, most of the time, it was the underlying plot on which the book was based. I don't know if I will read any more books by this author, I certainly won't if I have to pay for them.

Enjoyable read

I enjoyed this book immensely. The characters were well developed and likeable. The story starts with a young midwife and her father who is a physician. Her father is killed suddenly, making the young woman stronger. The rest of the story covers her marriage and her adult children (one becomes a doctor.) The story covers two families and how they intertwine. Coming full circle to the place where her father died, there is a happy ending and who doesn't like those. The female characters in the story are strong willed and independent but still remain feminine. I enjoyed the more formal writing style of the period. I look forward to more books by this author.

While teaching the Numerical Methods for Engineers course over the last 15 years, the author found a need for a new textbook, one that was less elementary, provided applications and problems better suited for chemical engineers, and contained instruction in Visual Basic� for Applications (VBA). This led to six years of developing teaching notes that have been enhanced to create the current textbook, Numerical Methods for Chemical Engineers Using Excel�, VBA, and MATLAB�.

Focusing on Excel gives the advantage of it being generally available, since it is present on every computer―PC and Mac―that has Microsoft Office installed. The VBA programming environment comes with Excel and greatly enhances the capabilities of Excel spreadsheets. While there is no perfect programming system, teaching this combination offers knowledge in a widely available program that is commonly used (Excel) as well as a popular academic software package (MATLAB). Chapters cover nonlinear equations, Visual Basic, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, regression analysis, partial differential equations, and mathematical programming methods.

Each chapter contains examples that show in detail how a particular numerical method or programming methodology can be implemented in Excel and/or VBA (or MATLAB in chapter 10). Most of the examples and problems presented in the text are related to chemical and biomolecular engineering and cover a broad range of application areas including thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, reaction kinetics, reactor design, process design, and process control. The chapters feature "Did You Know" boxes, used to remind readers of Excel features. They also contain end-of-chapter exercises, with solutions provided.

About the Author

Victor J. Law, Ph.D., FAIChE, FIChemE, CE, initiated a program that was to become the Department of Computer Science at Tulane. During his tenure in computer science, he wrote two textbooks on introductory computer programming. In 1988, Dr. Law returned to the Chemical Engineering Department in order to resume his research career. He has taught classes in process control, transport phenomena, process design, engineering statistics, and numerical methods for chemical engineers. His research has included projects in coastal erosion, methane emissions from rice paddies, thermochemical processes for hydrogen production from water, and butanol production from biomass. Dr. Law is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers; a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers; a Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom and Europe; and a Registered Professional Engineer, State of Louisiana.

Excellent companion text, or reference for the working engineer

A little short on the theory behind numerical methods, but a very good reference for the working engineer who's got the background already. In fact, this is exactly what I'd want my notes to look like after a solid course on numerical methods (if I had the willpower to take great, detailed notes, that is.) The emphasis on Excel as opposed to traditional programming languages fits nicely with today's work environment.

Problem solving for Olympians

The Yaglom geometric transformation books are aimed at a mathematical Olympiad audience. The books are not primarily about transformations, they are mainly about how to use transformations to solve problems. Yaglom wrote the book in Russian back in the fifties, presenting geometrical transformations techniques to geometric problem solving. He introduces transformation types and then shows how they can be used to solve problems that otherwise would sometimes be almost unsolvable using elementary (synthetic) methods. Then he presents a set of problems that vary from difficult to fiendish. Full solutions are provided, you will need them. The Russian book has chapters on congruence, similarity and projective transformations that are contained in the three English translations published by the MAA. It continues with sections on inversion transformations that are not (yet?) translated into English.

This is the first of three books, it deals with congruence transformations. Examples of congruence transformations are reflections in a line or in a point and translations (parallel movements). One could make up a set of problems that can be solved by simply applying a convenient transformation, but that is not how Yaglom works. Most problems use one ore more other themes (tricks) besides a transformation. So let this not be your first geometry problem book.

Excellent step-by-step introduction to transformations

This book (first of three) is an excellent step-by-step introduction to some geometric transformations (in this volume: translations, reflections, and rotations) in the synthetic style (i.e., no algebra). The exercises are very good and full solutions are given to all. Lots of drawings to make everything easy to understand.

I'm using this book to 'reintroduce' myself to geometry after being away from the study of mathematics for many years and it is great fun.

As part of the New Mathematical Library it is ideal for the advanced high school student or the enthusiast/amateur (like me).

Transformations Review.

This is an excellent introduction to geometric transformations. It is very useful for Competitions such as the AIME USAMO and IMO. Also, it is a great book for those interested in Mathematics.
