This is a life changing book! looking to get confidence and stability in your life I will recommend this book! very spiritual and life guidance read. Norman Vincent help change many lives with this book and I am glad to have come across this gem. I encourage anyone who wants to have a life changing experience please purchase this book and read it every where you go. I refer this book to my friends and family, I feel everyone should read this book. Its simple solutions to our everyday life but we don't think of an easy solution. It eliminates negativity and problems out of your life, it shows you methods on how to increase your performance in whatever you do. The best part is you can read it over and over and find hidden passages that can continue to help and grow you as a person.

I love it so much I've read it twice and now ...

I consider this book fundamental to the "living life better" agenda. It has helped me immensely in the past 10 months or so. I love it so much I've read it twice and now reading (out loud) daily for the 3rd time with my family. The original was written in the 1930s, but still reads fresh perhaps because my version was updated in 1980. It's written by a pastor but he mostly used mainstream faith ideas and I manage to ignore/substitute others with my Muslim faith references. If you are a person of faith, get this book – your mind will thank you for it. Dr. Peale is a master story teller - the book includes great stories upon great stories.

Steamy Scottish Installment in the Tudor series!

Notwithstanding the name, MY FAIR HIGHLANDER is the second in Wine's English Tudor saga (the first was IMPROPER SEDUCTION). This latest installment takes place on the border lands between England and Scotland (but mostly in one Scottish castle), as King Henry VIII is dying and there is concern over whether young Princess Mary will be raised Catholic or Protestant. English Lord Curan Ramsden (the hero in IMPROPER SEDUCTION) has a wild sister, Jemma, who at 24 has lost years of marriage prospects due to her tending their dying father. But all is not lost. The neighboring Scottish Laird Barras, Gordon Dwyre, has asked permission to court Jemma. Lost in her grief over her father's death, Jemma has been somewhat indifferent to Gordon's few visits to her brother's estate, Amber Hill. When Gordon rescues Jemma from an attack and near rape by British soldiers, he brings her back to his castle meaning to keep her and intent on courting her in earnest. If you've read any of Wine's other romances, you can imagine Gordon's idea of courting is very sensual. The sparks start to fly as the these two strong-willed people discover more about each other and find they share great passion. But all is not well. A former mistress of Gordon's wants Jemma gone.

This romance describes a lot of castle life and Wine remains fascinated with plumbing technology. I found that detail interesting but it contrasted rather sharply with what was mostly a physical relationship between the two main characters. Wine's dialog is brilliant and entertaining, even funny at times. Gordon has a wry sense of humor and Jemma has had so little joy in her life, his teasing warms as well as irritates her. As always, Wine's love scenes are frequent and steamy. While there is a plot, it's not your average historical romance to be sure. For those who don't mind that, I can recommend this one and believe she has done a superb job of telling the story in her own special way.

Oh, by the way, forget the picture on the cover. Gordon has hair "dark as midnight" and his plaid is orange and rust, not blue. Like most of Wine's romances, we are given no idea of what the heroine looks like, except that we are told from page one she is "beautiful."

This is the story of Jemma Ramsden,the sister of Curan Ramsden,Lord Ryppon (from "Improper Seduction") and Gordon Dwyre,Laird Barras. Together they embark on a journey of passion,love,danger,sensual tension,witty banter,strong wills,with highlander charm and forbidden desires. Very Good Highlander Romance, Looking forward to the rest of the series!

My Fair Highlander takes place in the Tudor time period, on the border between Scotland and England. Laird Barras is the neighbor (on the Scotland side) to Jemma Ramsden, an English lady. I really was not Jemma's biggest fan, at first. She was consumed by grief after the passing of her father, and she was very selfish. She was argumentative towards her brother, and she made bad decisions, such as taking an evening ride along the England/Scotland border. During this fateful ride, Jemma was accosted by English soldiers and subsequently saved by Laird Barras, who had been attracted to Jemma for awhile. Gordon (Laird Barras) decides to keep Jemma at his keep to get to know her and "court" her. Although, after her bad decision for evening riding, Gordan is not sure she is the woman he needs. Jemma needs to overcome her grief and embrace her life and hopefully her future.

I really liked Gordon, Laird Barras. He is a Highlander in a difficult time, a time period where religious tensions are high and the Scottish monarch was only a babe. He is a good leader for his people and he is willing to negotiate and work with the english, to do whatever would be necessary to take care of his people and his land. Gordon manages to keep to the highlander ways of capturing brides. After rescuing Jemma, he keeps her in his keep, and I fully enjoyed his manner of courtship. He shows his sweet side with Jemma as well as his tough, warrior side creating good chemistry between himself and Jemma. As for Jemma, while she has selfish tendencies, she does begin to come out of her shell and grow as a character. She has to deal with prejudice from some of the Scottish women, and she has to stand up to Gordon himself quite a bit as well. I can appreciate the prejudice that Jemma faced as an Englishwoman in Scottish territory, she was not accepted just because the Laird liked her. She had to earn her place, and with that she earned my respect.

My Fair Highlander is a very good historical romance read, the issues the people face are consistent with the historical time period. While this book is book 2 in a series, it is still able to be read as a stand alone. I have not yet read book 1 in the series, and I had no problem understanding the story or the characters. However, after reading book 2, I think that I am going to have to get book 1 as well because previous story lines that were mentioned sound pretty good too. Readers, if you enjoy historicals, highlanders, or romances I recommend reading My Fair Highlander.

About the Author

Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, went to Cleveland, Ohio, lived for a number of years in Chicago, and long resided in New York City's Harlem. He graduated from Lincoln University in 1929 and was awarded an honorary Litt. D. in 1943. He was perhaps best known as a poet and the creator of Simple, but he also wrote novels, biography, history, plays (several of them Broadway hits), and children's books, and he edited several anthologies. Mr. Hughes died in 1967.

Arnold Rampersad, author of the widely acclaimed biography The Life of Langston Hughes, is Woodrow Wilson Professor of Literature and director of American Studies at Princeton University.

I read this book as a restless twenty something, with a lifelong case of wanderlust. As a 46 year old, I still have it, and I'm rediscovering this beautiful autobiography of a fellow soul.

Mr. Hughes brings a zen like quality to his stories regarding his life and what he was forced to endure. He persevered, triumphed and soared. If you want to feel at peace with yourself this is a book to help you get there. Mr. Hughes is a role model that we should be glad we have. a gracious kind compassionate human. imho ;>)

As the sequel to "The Big Sea", Mr.Hughes again speaks the language of a poet so well that he makes the reading of his life seem like a first-person experience. After his travels on several ships and the taste of his first successes(and failures), he simply explores and writes: of Paris, Russia, and Cuba, and shares his experiences with the reader. His writing is so rich and vivid that he makes every location in the world seem like poetry in motion. This book and "The Big Sea" should definitely be on reading lists everywhere-or, if you have a friend or relative who feels like they're a "wandering spirit", these books would make great gifts. Mr.Hughes touches on everything human: from the strained relationship with his father to the blatant racism he encounters everyday; to the women he becomes fond of and his neverending thirst for experience and knowledge; to the countless sights of wonder in the world that one never sees when they are ignorant. Beautiful writing by a true poet.

teaches highly value added skills

All mainstream computer languages implement a common set of data structures and algorithms. If you are a computer science student, you must learn these at a level that you can at least facilely code using them. What language you do it in is probably secondary. Well here, Lewis and Chase instantiate the pedagogy in Java. A good choice. They have updated this second edition so that it uses Java 1.5 (aka Tiger).

They assume you have a rough working knowledge of Java. This is not the time or place to go over basic syntax. Though you should already know the basics of object oriented programming, they give an entire chapter to thoroughly discussing how to do so. In this chapter, you should pay close heed to the section on interfaces. More than many other aspects of Java, interfaces help you build modular code. To explicitly reduce the coupling between different classes, where one class might call the other. Instead of doing a direct call, if interfaces are used to mediate this instantiation, it is a huge boost to modular design. My only gripe here with the interface text is that I think it does not stress enough how useful this is. Only when you've tried to do a large project might you fully appreciate using interfaces.

Later chapters show you how the base Java comes with a rich assortment of very useful classes. That implement queues, linked lists, lists, stacks, trees and collections. These can match or even exceed what is available on these topics in the C++ Standard Template Library. While poor old C totally lacks them.

I teach Data Structures. I like this book because it covers a lot of material in an easy to understand way. There are several areas that need to be improved:

*The exercises are awful. I like to assign homework problems from the book, but I can't if I use this book.
*The material on stacks, queues, and lists is in a weird order. Some Linked List concepts are given in Chapter 4, then revisited in Chapter 6. By the time you get to Chapter 6, it seems like most of the Linked List concepts have already had to have been covered to get through Chapters 4 and 5. And the array and linked implementations are all mixed together.

Excellent, but only for the right purpose

This is an absolutely outstanding book, but it depends on your intent. This is not a general purpose Java book. In fact, the Java aspect is almost incidental. This is a data structures and algorithms book. It's intent is to teach core computer science concepts that trace their roots back literally decades, and will hold until the day comes when someone figures out how to exceed the Turing model, which will change life as we know it so substantially that *all* your computer books will become instantly obsolete. In the mean time, if you want to learn Java per se, do not buy this book! If you want to understand the building blocks of computer science, definitely buy this book. It's ability to concisely address all the key concepts is amazing. I teach a computer science class on data structures and algorithms, and I evaluated several books other than this one. At first glance, I did not like this book because it was so easy to read and presented concepts so effectively that I thought it was too lightweight. But as I read it, I was amazed at how well it covered everything, and did it with brevity and clarity. It starts from basic sets and linked structures and makes it all the way through complex trees and graphs. Again, don't get it if just learning Java is your goal, that is definitely not its purpose, but if you want to understand the foundational programming tools of computer science, this book is great. (Note: this book has been superceded by "Java Foundations", also by Lewis, and also a nicely enhanced version of the same great content.)

About the Author
Gilbert Strang is a Professor of Mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, of the University of Oxford, UK. His current research interests include linear algebra, wavelets and filter banks, applied mathematics, and engineering mathematics. He is the author or co-author of six textbooks and has published a monograph with George Fix titled "An Analysis of the Finite Element Method." Professor Strang served as SIAM’s president from 1999-2000, chaired the US National Committee on Mathematics from 2003–2004, and won the Neumann Medal of the US Association of Computational Mechanics in 2005. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

If you'd like to know why FEM works...

This book details the mathematical analysis which justifies the finite element method which was largely discovered and explored in the late 60's. It stays in the linear or Hilbert Space domain. This is not a limitation and is still current as nonlinearity is usually introduced at a degree of approximation. Convergence arguments are done largely through skillful use of Hilbert Space norms and Cauchy sequences. Worthy reference as much of the justification is far from obvious.

If you're a numerical analyst or an engineer interested in the basic theory of the finite element method, this book belongs on your shelf. If you have no interest in finite elements but enjoy well-written mathematical literature, this book still belongs on your shelf. Though some sections are dated, the contents of this book remain a solid foundation for understanding the behavior of finite element techniques in theory and in practice. Furthermore, while the contents are mathematically rigorous, the authors largely avoid the theorem/lemma/proof of most mathematical books, and instead describe the analysis in an almost conversational tone. Reading Strang and Fix reminds me of reading Lanczos: the book is dense with ideas which are both mathematically and practically interesting, but the presentation is so smooth that one can almost read it as one reads a novel.
