The Fox and the Grapes.

This is one of the best textbooks currently in existence for an intro to the academic discipline of Social Justice. It is well-put together, easily accessible and makes complex and nuanced arguments clear and understandable to students. However, it is fundamentally flawed in its presentation and foundations. The arguments within the book are never presented as arguments, but as facts that one must accept wholeheartedly and without question. Going so far as to say that even questioning key concepts in the book is a manifestation of racism. The author's underpinning reliance on logical fallacies made me grimace and shudder. Even when I agreed with many of the book's conclusions, I found that most arguments, in summation, are based on nothing more than an appeal to authority. I left this book and the class I took it for with little respect for Social Justice as a legitimate academic discipline that encourages free thought and open debate.

You missed the point.

It seems to me that many reviewers here are rating this book not by the quality of the ideas but by the extent to which they agree with them. This a problematic, anti-intellectual way to judge anything. As any critical thinker will agree, the ideas and concepts are well-argued, cogent and supported with facts. To disagree with the authors would be the assume the position of the willfully ignorant, myopic individuals standing so close to the bird cage (page 47) as to only see single bars and ask why doesn't the bird just fly out. Which is to say not fully understand the issues (white privilege, institutional racism, oppression, etc) because you don't have a clear picture. By reading this book, you were supposed to learn how to take a step back, notice how the bars actually make up a cage and gain a clearer, more comprehensive understanding of issues at hand. You missed the point.

Opinions hidden in pseudo logic

The authors of this book assume that racism is rampant in America, whites are the primary cause of prejudice, and continually build arguments through that lens. If you agree and want moral support for your position, you will love this book. If you want to learn multiple viewpoints then I recommend finding a book written by an open-minded author, who avoids deception in building arguments that appear to be logical at first glance. They do it well, so I'm giving it 2 stars based on that alone. A good instructor could find use for this book as one of multiple sources on the subject. If your instructor uses this as their only source, they are probably pushing their own agenda, rather than encouraging open-minded intellectual debate on the topic.

A Guidebook for Teaching and Assessing 21st Century Competencies

In my work as a Project Based Learning coach in northeast Indiana, I am constantly encouraging the teachers I work with to actively teach and assess 21st Century Competencies in their projects. This book does for teachers what a great travel guide does for tourists- it gives practical advice and methods for helping their students get where they need to be. This book and "PBL in the Elementary Grades" go wherever I go. My copies oftentimes "disappear"- which simply means that others are getting the benefits of the wisdom contained therein.

A Great How-To

My favorite books as a teacher are the ones that give me practical advice. There is also a lot of talk in education about developing 21st century skills but not a lot that tells you how. This book is the best I have found at giving practical advice on how to teach these skills to students. A must have in your library.

Albert Jonsen, a distinguished theoretician and practitioner of bioethics, has written what is essentially a prehistory of the field. He begins with the Greek and Roman period (from the fifth century b.c.e. to the third century c.e.), moves on to medieval medicine, embarks on a quick tour of medical ethics in India and China, returns to European medical ethics, and then concludes with developments in America. For most of this 2500-year period, medical ethics consisted of physicians' defining the proper conduct for their profession. Jonsen classifies most of this conduct as decorum: demeanor such as politeness and respectfulness that was thought to reflect inner virtue. Other kinds of behavior advocated over the centuries included what Jonsen calls deontology: actions dictated by moral rules, such as refusal to take a life or perform an abortion. Occasionally, the discussions of moral conduct focused on what he calls "politic ethics," the relationship of physicians to the surrounding community, which determined, for example, whether a doctor should flee or stay with his patients during an epidemic of plague.

In the course of exploring the concepts of deontology, decorum, and politic ethics, Jonsen makes interesting observations that challenge prevailing assumptions about ethics. In his discussion of the Hippocratic corpus, he comments on the widely quoted injunction to "do no harm," which may have been a reaction to the tendency to subject patients to the rigors of medicine even though they had no chance of recovering. Jonsen argues that the exhortation against taking on desperate cases, far from endorsing the abandonment of dying patients, was in fact a judicious caution against futile therapy. Jonsen also observes that Eastern and Western cultures shared similar ethical precepts, in contrast to the modern view that medical ethics is culture-specific. At least in the long prehistory of bioethics, he suggests, there may have been a "universal moral atmosphere that surrounds the work of caring for the sick and pervades that work."

Despite its brevity, A Short History of Medical Ethics may be most useful as a reference work. It is full of pithy descriptions of pivotal works. Jonsen devotes several pages to the British physician, Thomas Percival, who introduced the term "medical ethics" in 1803. Percival wrote mainly about decorum but began to view the conduct of physicians in the broad context of the whole society. Jonsen also summarizes the views of the respected American physician Richard Cabot (1868-1939), who helped establish the discipline of medical social work and retooled himself as a moral philosopher. Jonsen sees Cabot's contribution to ethics as the recognition that the physician's primary moral duty was to master scientific medicine and to apply this knowledge to the care of patients.

A Short History of Medical Ethics is a scholarly prologue to the evolving world of contemporary bioethics. In the penultimate chapter, Jonsen takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of some of the seminal events that shaped the new discipline, among them the Nuremberg Tribunal of 1947, with its condemnation of experimentation without the consent of the subjects; the introduction of hemodialysis in 1960 and the adoption of "social worth criteria" for the allocation of resources by the Seattle Artificial Kidney Center; and in 1973, Roe v. Wade, the case in which the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that the constitutional right to privacy prevents state laws from restricting the right of a woman to obtain an abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy. Today's bioethics is enriched by a conceptual framework that goes beyond decorum and deontology and that takes the patient's perspective as its starting point. Modern bioethics reformulates the fundamental moral problem as a problem for society, rather than merely one of professional self-regulation. I would add to Jonsen's list of the ways in which today's bioethics has transcended its predecessors the use of empirical data to help answer questions. The old question of whether patients should be told the truth about their conditions, for instance, can be answered in part by studying the types of information patients want and by examining the consequences of their having information. Not surprisingly, A Short History of Medical Ethics is at least as useful for what it tells us about earlier societies as it is for what it tells us about bioethics.

The copyright for this book is 2000 not 2008. Good book I utilize it for teaching Clinical Ethics (the history portion of the class) to pre-health profession students 4th year undergraduate education. The need a newer edition though as the year 2000 is leaving out a lot of important ethical concerns and issues that have occurred in the past 12 years. Would also recommend Clinical Ethics in which Albert R. Jonsen is one of three authors of that book. That is the text I teach from for the majority of the class.

About the Author

Suzanne Carreker is Director of Teacher Development at Neuhaus Education Center in Bellaire, Texas, and is a Certified Academic Language Therapist and Qualified Instructor. For 17 years, she has been involved with the preparation of teachers who provide instruction in basic literacy skills. She was a classroom teacher at and consultant to The Briarwood School in Houston for 13 years. Mrs. Carreker is a frequent speaker at national conferences and has authored several multisensory structure language curricula. She has served as president of the Houston Branch of The International Dyslexia Association and currently is Vice President of the Academic Language Therapy Association Centers Council.

Judith R. Birsh, Ed.D., founded and has directed the Multisensory Teaching of Basic Language Skills Series in the Program in Learning Disabilities of the Department of Curriculum and Teaching since 1985. Her primary interests are the teaching of reading and the preparation of teachers to work with individuals with dyslexia. She is a consultant to public and private schools as well as a certified academic language therapist. Dr. Birsh was educational consultant on two Vineyard Video Productions videotape series for teachers and parents, Teaching the Learning Disabled: Study Skills and Learning Strategies (1991) and Learning Disabilities/Learning Abilities (1997; available from Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co.). She is former president of the New York Branch of the International Dyslexia Association and was the 1995 recipient of their award for achievement in the field of dyslexia education.

Marcia K. Henry, Ph.D., brings more than 40 years of experience working in the field of reading and dyslexia as a diagnostician, tutor, teacher, and professor. Dr. Henry received her doctorate in educational psychology from Stanford University. Prior to her retirement in 1995, she was a professor in the Division of Special Education at San Jose State University, where she taught and directed the Center for Educational Research on Dyslexia. Dr. Henry taught as a Fulbright Lecturer/Research Scholar at the University of Trondheim, Norway, in 1991. Dr. Henry speaks frequently at regional, national, and international conferences on topics related to intervention strategies for dyslexic learners. She also writes for a variety of professional journals and serves on the editorial boards of Dyslexia and Annals of Dyslexia, the journals of The British Dyslexia Association and The International Dyslexia Association (IDA), respectively. Since retirement Dr. Henry has taught at the University of New Mexico, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She provides teacher training related to the teaching of reading and related language arts and consults with several school districts and states on informed reading instruction. Dr. Henry is the author of teaching materials for integrated decoding and spelling instruction. She is a past president (1992-1996) of the Orton Dyslexia Society (now known as IDA). She is a fellow of the Orton-Gillingham Academy and received the Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award from IDA in 2000. Dr. Henry now lives on Madeline Island in Lake Superior, where she spends much of her time writing. She volunteers as a tutor at the island two-room elementary school when needed. She compiled Dyslexia: Samuel T. Orton and His Legacy for IDA's 50th anniversary in 1999.

Ms. Wolf received her M.Ed. in education at Seattle Pacific University and brings to this collaborative effort experience as a classroom teacher, principal of an elementary school for children with dyslexia, Dean of Faculty for the Slingerland� Institute for Literacy, and an educational consultant providing professional development nationally and locally on structured language teaching. She has authored articles and books about dyslexia, creative activities for the classroom, and language-related guides for teachers. Ms. Wolf is a member of the Council of Advisors of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), a past secretary and board member of IDA, the recipient of the John and Beth Slingerland Award from the Slingerland� Institute, the Beth Slingerland Award from the Puget Branch of the Orton Dyslexia Society (WABIDA), and the Outstanding Educator Award from the Renton School District. Through her professional experiences she has had the good fortune to hold the hands of teachers whose professional expertise and experience helped shaped her own work as she in turn shared with them. Ms. Wolf is inspired by her ongoing work with the next generation of teachers. They stimulate her and motivate her to continue to develop materials that make teaching and learning exciting and fun. As she does, she reminds others that students with learning disabilities benefit from the collaboration of many professionals sharing with each other, as captured in this quotation from Hellman and Feibleman (1984, p. xx): "It goes in a circle and always has, like a child's dance of ring around the rosy. If I am any good, the person holding my hand has a chance of being even better."

This is not a book you pick up at the store to read for pleasure. This is a book for a parent looking for answers the school doesn't have. This is a book for a classroom teacher trying to implement the new ELA common core standards. This is a book for the reading specialist in charge of making sure struggling readers can succeed on tough state assessments. This is a book for the special education teacher, whose students don't respond to instruction the way other students do. This book is for the speech therapist to help students connect oral language with the written word. This book is for everymember of a student's IEP team to guarantee that students are quickly and accurately diagnosed with reading disabilities and that appropriate plans are developed to ensure success for each and every student. Great resource

I am a special education teacher in a district that can't afford "specialists" so I had to try to learn as much about reading as I could to try to help my students. I was expecting multi-sensory to involve more movement. There kinesthetic element refers to the movement of the jaw when pronouncing various phonemes. The book is 600 + pages and I read all but the two chapters that didn't readily apply to me in my middle school setting. The principles explained in this book that I've used so far have been helpful and effective.
