Great book to get you started with your android phone
By William A. Mead
So you got a smart phone for Christmas. Now what? Or perhaps you are due for an upgrade from your carrier and you want to see what all the fuss is about. I strongly recommend you read through this book. Mr. Huddleston's writing style is clear and efficient. He has a sense of humor, but is not annoying or overly wordy. The book is casual and conversational, but is also extremely informative and thorough.
Please note this is not a technical how to manual. It's more like sitting down with a technically savvy buddy and having him walk you through the many things your amazing new device can do, with all sorts of recommendations and caveats along the way. The first chapter will get you up to speed quickly with your phone, but the real treasure of this book lies deeper in the following chapters. For example, you are curious about twitter. Maybe you signed up for an account, but perhaps because you are over 35 years old, you are a bit distrustful of it. In chapter 5, the author gives a great two page introduction to the service and how to make use of it on your phone. Dozens of applications are mentioned throughout the book and put into useful context so that you can better communicate, stay more connected, be more productive or just kill time with something fun.
After reading this book, you will be able to confidently guide your way through the process of turning this magical, digital, information and media saturated age into a rich personal experience, which can be shared with your family and friends, no matter where they are located.
Perhaps the only complaint about the book stems from the lickable yellow button on the front cover which claims the book covers all android phones. While this is true from a certain perspective, in that the book has a lot of wonderful general information, it certainly won't replace the user manual that came with your phone. And if you happen to be sporting an older model, you will surely finish the book lusting after the latest and greatest.
Having said that, if you are looking for an excellent introduction to what the world of mobile computing is all about, you have found a great place to start. Or if you are looking to round out your understanding of how to get the most out of your mobile computing device, this book will point you in dozens of directions to do so.

Oddly good
By Tyler Forge
Executive summary: It was actually worthwhile for me, a guy who has used android phones since the beginning.
Confession first - I got this book through the Amazon vine program because it would be free for me. I'd have never paid for what I figured to be a glorified magazine article that might turn me on to a fun app or two.
I was very pleasantly surprised. Yes, there was the app here and there that proved useful or interesting. That I expected. What I didn't expect is to actually learn about stuff I'd been overlooking. After all these years I thought I knew what my phone could do, what was useful, and what was BS. Well, my current phone (galaxy nexus) really is generations ahead of that G1 from years past. A lot of capability has crept in under the radar and I didn't know about it.
So... I actually spent hours going through this book that I had planned to quickly scan.
Just to be specific about a few things, I ended up trying swype and voice dialing (again). Voice dialing is much better than before. Swype - well, I'm still getting used to it. I got pretty good with graffiti on my palm/handspring back in the day, swype should be about the same.
I also finally decided to mess with the Amazon app store and wondered why I'd put that off for so long.
Overall the book was useful enough that I stopped keeping notes of useful stuff. I knew I'd be writing this review so I started off taking notes. I stopped after a while because I was finding too much noteworthy (in a good way) stuff.
This book really exceeded expectations.

Nice Humanistic Approach to Technology, But...
By WhereWaldoFindsHimself
The sad part about this book is that by the time the author would get done writing about a certain feature (or lack of one) in the android market, the market would change, and for many segments of the book, the author addends the many updates and rewrites.
It seems to be the nature of the beast that the android format is such a chameleon that it's almost impossible to keep up with the morphing through the medium of a book format.
However, for older people just getting their first tablet and feeling overwhelmed about features and functions, the author's "cozy" tone and anecdotal explanations provide comfortable points of reference around which to anchor a comprehension of the android world. So this book does have an important place as a reference work.
