No information, short book, look elsewhere

This book contains very basic, and I mean basic information. The title leads you to believe it contains a five-year plan to help you towards self-sufficiency. The title is VERY misleading. Each 'year' covered in book only adds more possible garden plants you can grow and maybe an additional breed of livestock. If you know absolutely nothing about gardening or have never heard of the idea of raising chickens and goats, then this book is for you.
The book has large print and wide margins. There is nothing in this book that will help you become self-sufficient. The author does not include 97% of the details it takes to grow and store food, manage livestock, or the impacts of becoming truely self-sufficient.
I can sum this book up in one sentance: Grow a garden, get some chickens, a few goats and possibly some meat rabbits. I think an average "country person" could have written this book in a weekend.
I laughed when the author rambles about cutting debt and getting rid of "extras"; and then mentions that there are free apps for your smartphone to help manage your tasks.
I recommend you look elsewhere for a book on "self-sufficiency".

Broken Down Nicely

Like the headline says the book is set up nicely. Do this your first year and grow this many of plant A per person. Try these animals and these projects. Year 2 plant year 1 plus x number of this plant per person. Good way to get a realistic idea of what is possible each year.

Great jump start

This is such a good book for people who are interested in self-sufficiency! It is NOT for someone who is already five years into the process. This is the book for people who are thinking, dreaming, and fantasizing about having their own little plot, hobby farm, etc. It is general enough to not be intimidating and in that way is almost like a book for dummies but even someone like me who has intermediate info on gardening and dairy goats (I have a black thumb from hell so none of it seems to help), I still found this useful and very motivating to keep planning and now I have a guide!
Cheap book so it's worth it to add to your collection.
