Good book, great story, but I wanted the script.
By James Ziessler
The book pictured in blue was not the book sent to me. I was disappointed because the other books with the same title are the story. Which is a wonderful story. But what I ordered was the blue book of the same title but it is written in "script" form to use for a play or theater application. It was very inexpensive and I didn't return or dispute it because I can always use another copy. But if the ad and the book were better identified or described I wouldn't have bought another story version, when I wanted the script instead.
I really think the picture in advertising was displayed incorrectly. I have recently ordered the blue version, which is the script format, and it came as advertised.
The script form is a wonderful application of the story to be used as a play or dramatic presentation. Very little you have to do to make it work for adults or children.
In the future, to anyone who reads this, be sure to ask if it is the story book form or script form. For some of you the story is what you want and it is indicated with a couple different types of pictures on the front of the book. The script form is as you see it, which is the blue cover and says (Script).

Looking for a Christmas Play - here's one for you!
By Casey K. Conrad
This is an excellent play for a Christmas program. It has a large cast, so be prepared. However, all of the characters are wonderfully written, as well as the story. It is a comical approach to putting together a Christmas program, which I have done for several years.

If you are looking for a play to tell the Christmas story, and how all Christians need to work together despite our differences - I would highly recommend this production. Plus, it is very funny which is always a plus.

It was a great script to read!

This is a PLAY - not the short story - and it's wonderful.
By Just a Putz in WI
Most reviews seem to be focusing on something other than what this is - either they are complaining about delivery or were confused about what they were ordering.

This is the PLAY version of this story, adapted by Barbara Robinson herself. We just finished a production and it's wonderful. Great story, compactly told with nice narration. If you don't know the book - get it, read it, it's a great mix of fun and honestly with a touch of a tear-maker at the end. A good mix of what is in the book, but with an eye to theatricality. There are a couple transitions that were weird for us, since the play was adapted very surely with a proscenium stage in mind, which we don't have, so curtain fly-ins and in-one scenes were really not an option, BUT...those are issues we solved.

Straightforward and Light
By Rachel
I had to get this textbook for a distance education course at my university. The textbook content itself is not extraordinary, but it is relatively straightforward and not too difficult to understand, especially for anyone who has had a course in Statistics before. The best part of this textbook is how small and light it is. If all textbooks were this light, I would carry them everywhere.

This book makes a good course companion, but I would not suggest this as a textbook for someone who is looking to teach themselves Statistics. Without a background in basic Statistics or a professor to provide answers to questions, this book won't seem as simple.

Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time and the Texture of Reality (Penguin Press Science), by B. Greene

From the bestselling author of The Elegant Universe, Brian Greene's The Fabric of the Cosmos takes us on an irresistible and revelatory journey through the biggest of the big questions. What is reality? Could we exist without space and time? Can we travel to the past? What are the limits of the universe? Brian Greene has made the mysteries of space and time accessible to millions with his acclaimed writings and award-winning TV series. Now he reveals a world more beautiful and bizarre than we could have imagined, where 'dark matter' reigns, space warps and wiggles through eleven dimensions, minute particles dance, fizz and teleport across vast distances, everything is made of vibrating strings and, like an ant on a lily-pad, we may be floating on a sliver of spacetime. Revealing new layers of reality that lie just beneath the surface of our everyday lives, this grand tour of the universe will make you look at the world in a completely new way. 'A must-read' Sunday Times 'Greene takes us to the limits of space and time' Guardian 'Sends the reader's imagination hurtling through the universe on an astonishing ride' The New York Times Brian Greene is well known to many fans as a populariser of theoretical physics. He is the author of the bestselling books about string theory, The Elegant Universe, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction, The Fabric of the Cosmos, and The Hidden Reality. Educated at Harvard and Oxford, he has taught at both Harvard and Cornell and has been Professor of Physics and Mathematics at Columbia University since 1996.

Amazon.com Review
As a boy, Brian Greene read Albert Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus and was transformed. Camus, in Greene's paraphrase, insisted that the hero triumphs "by relinquishing everything beyond immediate experience." After wrestling with this idea, however, Greene rejected Camus and realized that his true idols were physicists; scientists who struggled "to assess life and to experience the universe at all possible levels, not just those that happened to be accessible to our frail human senses." His driving question in The Fabric of the Cosmos, then, is fundamental: "What is reality?" Over sixteen chapters, he traces the evolving human understanding of the substrate of the universe, from classical physics to ten-dimensional M-Theory.

Assuming an audience of non-specialists, Greene has set himself a daunting task: to explain non-intuitive, mathematical concepts like String Theory, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, and Inflationary Cosmology with analogies drawn from common experience. For the most part, he succeeds. His language reflects a deep passion for science and a gift for translating concepts into poetic images. When explaining, for example, the inability to see the higher dimensions inherent in string theory, Greene writes: "We don't see them because of the way we see…like an ant walking along a lily pad…we could be floating within a grand, expansive, higher-dimensional space."

For Greene, Rhodes Scholar and professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University, speculative science is not always as thorough and successful. His discussion of teleportation, for example, introduces and then quickly tables a valuable philosophical probing of identity. The paradoxes of time travel, however, are treated with greater depth, and his vision of life in a three-brane universe is compelling and--to use his description for quantum reality--"weird."

In the final pages Greene turns from science fiction back to the fringes of science fact, and he returns with rigor to frame discoveries likely to be made in the coming decades. "We are, most definitely, still wandering in the jungle," he concludes. Thanks to Greene, though, some of the underbrush has been cleared. --Patrick O'Kelley

From Publishers Weekly
String theory is a recent development in physics that, by positing that all which exists is composed of infinitesimally small vibrating loops of energy, seeks to unify Einstein's theories and those of quantum mechanics into a so-called "theory of everything." In 1999, Greene, one of the world's leading physicists, published The Elegant Universe (Norton), a popular presentation of string theory that became a major bestseller and, last fall, a highly rated PBS/Nova series. The strength of the book resided in Greene's unparalleled (among contemporary science writers) ability to translate higher mathematics (the language of physics) and its findings into everyday language and images, through adept use of metaphor and analogy, and crisp, witty prose. The same virtues adhere to this new book, which offers a lively view of human understanding of space and time, an understanding of which string theory is an as-yet unproven advance. To do this, Greene takes a roughly chronological approach, beginning with Newton, moving through Einstein and quantum physics, and on to string theory and its hypotheses (that there are 11 dimensions, ten of space and one of time; that there may be an abundance of parallel universes; that time travel may be possible, and so on) and imminent experiments that may test some of its tenets. None of this is easy reading, mostly because the concepts are tough to grasp and Greene never seems to compromise on accuracy. Eighty-five line drawings ease the task, however, as does Greene's felicitous narration; most importantly, though, Greene not only makes concepts clear but explains why they matter. He opens the book with a discussion of Camus's The Myth of Sisyphus, setting a humanistic tone that he sustains throughout. This is popular science writing of the highest order, with copious endnotes that, unlike the text, include some math.

From Bookmarks Magazine
If the idea that time may travel in more than one direction hurts your brain, there's hope for you yet. Greene, author of The Elegant Universe and professor at Columbia University, designed this dazzling overview of physical reality for general readers (and kindly gives ample notice when he's about to delve into physics-speak). Using humorous examples from everyday life, from Larry King and Homer Simpson to earthworms, Greene animates thorny questions of space, time, and reality. Although he stresses speculative physics, he often dismisses some of its implications. And the illustrations don't add much. But Greene's enthusiasm and "excitement for science on the threshold of vital breakthroughs," notes The New York Times, "is supremely contagious."

Better than I did with Stephen Hawking's "Brief History of ...
By J. Volz
I have no background in physics. He writes with humor and tries to appeal to the mathematically and physically (haha) impaired, but about half way through I began to struggle. I did learn what a quark was and I think I have some understanding, flawed as it is, of what quantum physics is and what string theory entails. So, my mind and my knowledge were expanded. But I really, really got last in the end. I read every word, however. Better than I did with Stephen Hawking's "Brief History of Time."

Complex theories across time and space explained.
By James Aker
Dr. Greene is an outstanding writer who explains the complex theories and hypotheses of String/M Theory and research into the very fabric of space and time. This book is an effort to put into terms at a layman's level, the very complex research going on today at places across the globe attempting to discover the fundamental makeup of the universe. For the most part Dr. Greene succeeds in his effort to make this intensely complex subject understandable.

Written as a further investigation that was begun with his book The Elegant Universe, in The Fabric of The Cosmos, Dr. Greene leads the reader on a expedition into the darkest corners of the universe exploring the fundamental building blocks of time and space, reality and imagination, and the arrow of time and why it appears to us to have but one direction. A String Theorist, Dr. Greene's explanations weigh heavily in that direction, but he does make inroads into other theories such as Loop Quantum Gravity and their position in the entire scope of research going on today.

As new experiments are conducted at facilities such as The Large Hadron Collider at CERN or at Fermilab in this decade, it will be interesting to see if Dr. Greene's hypotheses come to fruition or if entirely new paths may open in the search for a Unified theory of the quantum realm and Gravity. In the meantime, if you have an interest in Theoretical Physics, but lack the formal training necessary to understand it on a mathematical level, I recommend Dr. Green's book.

Wish It Were Required Reading
By Quinbus
My paperback copy of this book fell to pieces from frequent rereading, so I got the Kindle version -- imperishable, I hope -- to read through again over the last few weeks. Brian Greene's three popular books (this one, "The Elegant Universe" and "The Hidden Reality," which I also have via Kindle) are marvels of clear explanation for those of us who aren't mathematically gifted. Brian Greene is a working physicist with a particular focus on string theory, but he's not out to promote his own point of view, and doesn't hesitate to point out its current shortcomings and problems. He makes extensive use of endnotes to elaborate on difficult or tangential points. His prose is pleasant and conversational.

I've enjoyed his books very much and feel wiser, not stupider, after reading them -- not always the case when I finish a book meant to explain physics to the layman. Highly recommended. I only wish this was required reading for every liberal-arts student.

Western Sufism: From the Abbasids to the New Age, by Mark Sedgwick

Western Sufism is sometimes dismissed as a relatively recent "new age" phenomenon, but in this book Mark Sedgwick argues that it has deep roots, both in the Muslim world and in the West. In fact, although the first significant Western Sufi organization was not established until 1915, the first Western discussion of Sufism was printed in 1480, and Western interest in Sufi thought goes back to the thirteenth century. Sedgwick starts with the earliest origins of Western Sufism in late antique Neoplatonism and early Arab philosophy, and traces later origins in repeated intercultural transfers from the Muslim world to the West, in the thought of the European Renaissance and Enlightenment, and in the intellectual and religious ferment of the nineteenth century. He then follows the development of organized Sufism in the West from 1915 until 1968, the year in which the first Western Sufi order based on purely Islamic models was founded.

Western Sufism shows the influence of these origins, of thought both familiar and less familiar: Neoplatonic emanationism, perennialism, pantheism, universalism, and esotericism. Western Sufism is the product not of the new age but of Islam, the ancient world, and centuries of Western religious and intellectual history. Using sources from antiquity to the internet, Sedgwick demonstrates that the phenomenon of Western Sufism draws on centuries of intercultural transfers and is part of a long-established relationship between Western thought and Islam.

Review

"The list of intellectuals who have sneered at twentieth-century Western Sufis as peddling some form of 'neo-Sufism' or 'New Age syncretism' is long and depressing. In his new book, Mark Sedgwick impressively corrects this consensus by giving us the long arc. He traces the Christian and Jewish engagement with Sufism back to the fifteenth-century Renaissance, and then traces the mystical lingua franca of these transcultural transmissions even further back, through Arab and Scholastic philosophy and, finally, to the towering figure of Plotinus. Throughout it all, Sedgwick demonstrates an intellectual and spiritual generosity that is rare among scholars of this erudition and accomplishment. The implications are significant and far-reaching for any number of intellectual projects, from the histories of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism to the re-visioning of comparativism for a new generation." --Jeffrey J. Kripal, author of The Serpent's Gift: Gnostic Reflections on the Study of Religion

"This is the book on Sufism that I always wanted to read, but that I just couldn't find because Mark Sedgwick had not yet written it. Is Sufism Islamic or universal? Is it a historical phenomenon or a product of the imagination? Does it come from the East or the West? Is it one thing or many things? As it turns out, the answer to all these questions is 'both' - and yet there is something that holds it all together: the Platonic dream of reunion with the One True Reality that is hidden and yet made visible by the veil of appearances." --Wouter J. Hanegraaff, Professor of History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents, University of Amsterdam

"This work is both provocative and thought-provoking. Not only is it the first serious study of Sufism in the West but it also provides an argument for both Sufism and Islam as 'Western' spiritual traditions through the shared heritage of Neoplatonism. Besides providing important new material for scholars and students of Sufism, this book is also useful for both graduate and undergraduate courses on Sufism, Orientalism, Esotericism, and Religious Studies and Islamic Studies in general." --Vincent J. Cornell, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Middle East and Islamic Studies, Emory University

About the Author
When Canadian Dani Collins found romance novels in high school she immediately wondered how one trained for such an awesome job. She began writing, trying various genres, but always came back to her first love, Harlequin Presents. Often distracted by family and 'real' jobs, she continued writing, inspired by the romance message that if you hang in there you'll reach a happy ending. In May of 2012, Harlequin offered to buy her manuscript in a two book deal. She is living happily ever after.

Another knifing pain speared into her lower back, radiating like a spiked belt around her middle and clenching her torso in a merciless fist that stole her breath.

"Please call Alessandro," Octavia Ferrante begged in a pant, knotting her fists in the blanket beneath her as she braced herself for the next contraction. She was starting to fear that something would happen and she would never hear his voice again.

Her husband's cousin Primo Ferrante only sighed. His hold on the curtain dropped with disinterest as he turned away from the window. "I told you. He said he would come if the baby is born alive. Otherwise he's not going to put himself out."

She didn't want to believe it. Primo seemed to draw more enjoyment daily from tormenting her. She no longer trusted him and was sure this was more of his games.

But after this many months of being exiled to London by her husband, she was beginning to believe at least some of what Primo said. He was certainly correct in labeling her soft in the head. She'd let her life spiral beyond her grip. Pregnancy was an odd state, making you feel vulnerable in tiny degrees so you didn't realize how defenseless you were until the need to fight arose and there was nothing to draw on. She had insulated herself here, licking her wounds over Alessandro's rejection, and suddenly she had no resources. No one to help her.

Rebellion had backfired on her in the past so she rarely dissented, but she'd never been weak. At one time she'd been confident in herself, at least, if not truly assertive. She'd even felt a certain pride in those first few weeks of her marriage—

Another pain tore through her, making her grit her teeth to hold back a scream.

Alessandro, she silently begged, as a fresh wave of perspiration rose to ice her skin. But she knew all about men who wanted live births of their sons. Maybe Primo was telling the truth about her husband's lack of concern.

Call my mother then, she almost said as another pain gripped her, but her mother was also in Italy and would have even less sympathy. Eight times she'd gone through this. Seven of them fruitless labors. Eight, really, since Octavia was hardly counted as a valid heir.

Female. Only good for one thing. This.

Octavia had lived in fear all her life that she would suffer as her mother had, losing babies before she could deliver them. For good reason, apparently. This was not the idealistic, natural process the books promised. This was torture. The baby was coming a month too early, and the pain was terrifying. Something was wrong. She knew it.

"Where is the ambulance?" she cried as the pain throttled back enough that she could catch her breath and speak. "The clinic said to call one as soon as I went into labor. Did you do it?"

"You're being hysterical. These things take hours. You know that," Primo muttered.

He had said he would, but she would bet her life that he hadn't.

"Give me the phone," she demanded, holding out her hand. Why was he even here? Why wasn't her husband?

Her pains were coming on top of themselves. She had to wrap her arm across her swollen middle, fearful her skin would split under the stress.

"Please, Primo. I'm begging you. Take me to the hospital."

"You're an embarrassment to our family name," he said, sneering at her rumpled, sweaty form and tear-streaked face. "Where is all this pride in duty you once told me you had? Show some dignity."

His cruel words, delivered by a cruel man whom she hated with all her being, still had the power to wound. Because Alessandro had left her to this. Each time Primo verbally flayed her, she felt it as an uncaring swipe from Alessandro, like batting a fly. She had been his toy, perhaps, because he'd seemed so taken with her in those early days, but now she was nothing to him. Utterly forgotten. His indifference was a body blow every time she confronted it.

As anguished and defeated as that made her feel, she wasn't about to give birth on her bed, risking her baby's life and her own. Inching to the edge of the mattress, she braced herself on the night table, begging her knees to hold her. She'd crawl out of this room if she had to. Primo might wish her dead, but she wasn't going quietly.

"Is that blood?" Primo demanded sharply. His hawk-like gaze swooped from her tense face to the spotted blanket and back. His complexion grayed.

As she looked at the small mark, what little body heat remained in her drained from her face and chest and limbs. This was it, then. Like her mother, she was doomed to lose her baby. If she survived, this would happen again and again as she tried to live up to her side of the marital contract. Why, oh, why had she thought going through with an arranged marriage would finally earn her some respect from her father? Why had she let herself begin to care for her husband, hoping to earn his affection?

Why had she opened her heart and taken this unborn infant deep inside it, believing that finally there would be a human on this earth who loved her back?

No one was ever going to love her. She was the only person she could rely on. It was time to face that.

With a sob, she staggered across to where he'd left her phone on the windowsill and snatched it up. Bowing her head against the wall, silently praying, she dialed the number for emergency services and told them to send an ambulance.

Alessandro Ferrante saw his wife was calling and his pulse tripped. He immediately tamped down on the involuntary reaction, ruthlessly regaining control over himself and annoyed that he let her catch him so easily, even when she was on the other side of the continent.

But some measure of surprise was legitimate. She never called him anymore.

Which he was trying not to let bother him.

"Cara," he answered, ears straining for clues as to why she was calling now. It was late in London, even later here in Naples, but apparently they were both still up. Perhaps the baby was kicking. She had said a few times that she had trouble sleeping through that. It had made him feel the distance between them quite keenly…

He ignored the stab of something that might have been regret. The separation was necessary. He wouldn't give in to weak yearnings and wind up putting her in danger. That would be irresponsible.

"Sono io," Primo said into his ear. It's me.

Not Octavia then. Disappointment fell through him before he could deflect it. He habitually fought extreme degrees of emotion, never allowing them to rule his actions, but this marriage was becoming so very much not a marriage and it was beginning to frustrate him. It had started with such promise. They had had a remarkable compatibility, particularly in bed, but it had disintegrated into something he didn't know what to do with anymore.

Not for the first time, he questioned his decision to leave her in London, but all the facts remained the same: she was pregnant and at risk. Her mother had a history of losing babies. His mother's house in London was in the same city as a world-class specialist clinic, one that had been monitoring her closely. She was also safe from the threats here in Naples. His refusal to bring her home was absolutely the best thing for her and their unborn child.

His wife had taken to avoiding his calls, however. His cousin made all her reports, which was an intrusion Alessandro didn't appreciate. Why was Primo even still at his mother's house? How long did it take to get an apartment painted these days?

"Si?" Alessandro prompted his cousin now, tone sharpening with dismay.

"She's gone into labor," Primo said bluntly.

Alessandro sat up, arteries stinging with an immediate shot of adrenaline, the desk full of work before him forgotten. This was too early. Almost a month before her due date. He had planned to fly out next week. He reached for his tablet, already tapping out a message to his driver and pilot.

"It all happened very quickly or I would have called you sooner," Primo continued. "The ambulance was delayed and—well, there have been complications."

Silence followed.

Alessandro waited.

A knife of dread went through him, impossible to dodge. Primo liked to frame things in as much drama as possible. Sandro had talked to him about it more than once, told him that it only exacerbated situations, but Primo loved to grab and hold attention.

This wasn't the time.

Unless Primo was truly reluctant to deliver bad news.

Alessandro could hear the ticking of the clock that had been in his family for generations—tick, tick, tick. Like a bomb. He couldn't breathe. He was paralyzed, completely devoid of feeling and his mind was empty as he held off what he feared would be a repeat of another moment when tragedy unfolded. When tires screeched and—

"Yes?" he prompted, throat raspy and thick.

"They had to take her to the nearest hospital, not the one where she was scheduled to deliver. It's inundated with a bus crash, but they're taking her for surgery right now."

His nerves exploded with a rush of urgency, barely rational.

"Which hospital?" Alessandro demanded, fighting a ferocious grip of emotion that wanted to overstep reason and break down doors and walls and laws of man and nature to reach London. He grappled to stay calm, forcing himself to speak clearly even as his mind and heart raced. "I'm leaving now. I'll be there as soon as I can."

C* * *

Score one for state-run hospitals, was Octavia's first clear thought as her muddled brain came back from the anesthetic and worked out that Primo had no access to her son.

While he had followed her ambulance, she had clasped the female paramedic's hand, a kind of desperate fury gripping her. "Primo is not my husband. Not the father. Do not allow him near my baby. Tell the hospital to keep him out of the delivery room. I will hold you responsible if something happens."

She still felt irrational for saying it, but she just didn't trust him. Not after the way he'd moved into the mansion as if he owned it and had taken such great pains to make her miserable while he was there.

Despite his premature birth, her son was thankfully doing well. He was being kept in an incubator for observation and the nurse was about to take Octavia to the nursery to feed him.

The staff here was nice, treating her with more warmth and kindness than she'd seen in months. And Alessandro was on his way. He should be here soon, Primo had be-grudgingly told her as he'd paced her room.

Because it was a boy? Octavia tried not to feel bitter. Her father would be pleased, she supposed. Oddly, she discovered that she no longer cared what the men in her life expected of her. There was only one male to whom she wanted to answer and that would be on her own terms as his mother.

Still, part of her fluttered with a mixture of excitement and anxiety, knowing she'd finally see Alessandro again. He hadn't been here since Christmas and that had been a very brief few days. They hadn't even shared a bed, let alone the physical loving she'd been craving. Her condition had cut that off months ago.

Primo was telling the truth about one thing, she supposed. Alessandro not only thought she was fat and unattractive, but was taking his pleasure elsewhere.

So she shouldn't be feeling like this: as conflicted as she'd been in the weeks leading up to their wedding, when she'd been tormenting herself with worry over their wedding night. Would he think she was pretty? Would she please him?

With a pang in her heart, she recalled how silly it had been to stress about that side of things. Lovemaking had turned out to be the least of her concerns. Once they got past her virginal inhibitions, she'd adored making love with him, discovering things about herself and the fit of man and woman that astonished her.

But sex—or rather, lack thereof—had become yet one more way Alessandro had been showing her how little she interested him these days. It made her feel needy and pathetic that she ached for his attention, both in bed and out.

She'd learned long ago to roll that lonely emptiness into a wall of aloof indifference, though. She just wished she could feel aloof or indifferent at his impending arrival. But she couldn't.

"Mrs. Ferrante," the nurse, Wendy, greeted her as she brought in the empty wheelchair she'd fetched. "Let's take you to your little man."

Primo made no move to help Octavia and she was grateful, even though her emergency surgery had annihilated her abdominal muscles and the anesthetic still had her feeling nauseous and weak.

He did follow them from the room to the door of the nursery, though, obviously under the impression he could enter with them.

Wendy, bless her, said, "I'm sorry. Parents only in the nursery."

"Octavia," he prompted firmly.

"You'll have to meet Alessandro and show him where we are," she replied innocently.

The hospital wasn't that big. Alessandro was a resourceful man. He'd find her just fine, but Wendy was buzzing them into the nursery with her security card and the bright, warm room washed over Octavia like a hug of welcome. Beyond the windows, beams of morning sunlight broke the gray clouds hovering over London, sending angelic rays onto the rooftops and giving Octavia a lift of hope for the first time in ages.

"He's been calling for you," the heavyset nurse inside the nursery said. Her name tag read Hannah. "I'll fetch Miss Kelly while you're in here to keep an eye on this one," she said to Wendy, nodding at the only other baby in the room.

"The calm after the storm," Octavia said as she gingerly moved herself into one of the padded rocking chairs. "The emergency room was a zoo when I arrived last night."

The chaos had been alarming, adding to what was already a frightening situation. Tears of relief stung her eyes as she finally felt as if she could relax and hold the baby she'd been so worried for.

"I heard," Wendy responded as she gathered up the fussing baby from the incubator labeled Ferrante and loosely wrapped his diapered form in a blanket. "That's why Dr. Reynolds isn't in to see you yet. She had these two deliveries back-to-back, then they asked her to assist with that tourist bus crash that came in right before you two. She was here very late. Everyone was on their toes for hours. One of you was actually sewn up by our cosmetic surgeon so Dr. Reynolds could run to the other. Yes, we hear you, Mr. February," Wendy said as the baby in the other incubator grew more insistent.

Wendy came across to her, but something in the other baby's cry gave Octavia a stab of fretfulness. It was disconcerting, but Wendy distracted her, waiting with her baby, saying, "You'll want to take your arm out of the sleeve of your gown."

Octavia did, feeling immodest as she bared her breast, even though it was only her and the nurse in this very warm room. The baby Wendy offered her was clearly distressed and famished.

The Marriage His Must Keep
By Kindle Customer
This one of two books that intertwined due to the mix up of two babies born close together in the same hospital. Where they were switched at birth. This is the story of an arranged marriage that caused problems with in a family when the woman ended up marrying another man. And revenge was the key to the babies being switched. I read these books separately the first time but re-read them chapter by chapter till their story line took different turns. It was interesting that the author did a good job of continuity of the stories.

A Very good Book
By bratcat22
Another excellent book by Ms. Collins! At first I wanted to thump the hero upside the head for basically deserting his pregnant wife to the mercies of his unscrupulous cousin. The intentional baby swap at the hospital was really mean! Luckily, it opened the hero's eyes to the duplicity of his family and the real feelings he had for his arranged bride. I highly recommend this book. Another winner from Dani Collins!

The book was very slow and boring, I skimmed most of it
By Michele In Texas
This book was very disappointing after all the 5 star reviews. The big misunderstanding happened in the beginning of the book. There was really nothing to resolve as the couple was already married. The book was very slow and boring, I skimmed most of it. Save your money.

Interesting and Educational!
By Loyd Eskildson
"Billion-Dollar Gamble in Brazil" reports on the controversial experiment to grow paper-producing trees in the jungle and process them there in a mill assembled in Japan and towed to the site 15,500 miles away. The plan is for consuming 2,000 tons of wood/day to produce 35 mw electricity for supplying a paper-pulp mill and its supporting 30,000 people city. Native forests were to be cut down to plant fast-growing trees for paper production.

Cost of the power plant and pulp mill was $269 million. A 26-mile railroad terminus and 2,800 miles of road were waiting at the site. At the time of the article the plant was producing 750 tons of paper every day, worth $300,000. Contract labor turnover was 200%/year, and more than 20 have headed the project in its 13-year life.

Daniel Ludwig, financial backer and project creator, made his money originally in oil tankers and supertankers. His original tree choice, melina, grew a foot/month in Panama and Cost Rica but did not grow well in the sandy soil in Brazilian jungles - thus they switched to Caribbean pine and eucalyptus.

Postscript: Original expectations were to spend up to $500 million on the project; over-runs brought it to $1 billion. Revenue projections were $300 million - instead, 1979 revenues were $70 million, vs. operating costs of $110 million. Debt service made the red ink even worse, and no one was anxious to loan more on an uncertain project when the Brazilian government began challenging Ludwig's ownership of all the land and his tax exemptions. Ludwig gave the project, including its debts, to local businessmen.

Faith of Our Fathers, by Chan Kei Thong

Chan Kei Thong has brought up an interesting discussion about the relationship between God, China and its language. He thinks that China and Israel both share a long history with rich cultures. Due to the many similarities and belief in God as the only Creator, the author points out in detail how Chinese characters manifest historical evidences and many aspects recorded in the Bible. He claims China's 4000 years of history as proof to support that God has never left this country. Like New: Pages are clean and are not marred by notes or folds.

Interesting, but with Flaws
By April Knapp
Chan definitely brings up an interesting discussion in Faith of Our Fathers. The meat of the book (and most compelling evidence) is his section on the meaning of Chinese characters (writing) and how they reflect Biblical accounts and ideas. This is an idea I've noticed and have been intrigued by since I studied abroad in China. For example, the character for "righteousness" is a pictograph of a lamb being slain over a person, indicating that the Ancient Chinese recognized a need for a sacrifice in order to be made righteous. And there are tons like this that Chan points out.

Another compelling section is his citing of Ancient Chinese writings which show the Ancient Chinese peoples' view and understanding of God. It is interesting just of similar their religious practices and views of God were to the Ancient Hebrews.

I also enjoyed his section about Ancient Chinese astronomy and their interpretations of the stars. It sounds crazy, but it's really interesting how their recordings actually match up with biblical text.

However, I had some major problems with this book. Chan seems to stretch his historical interpretation a bit in order to make things fit his hypothesis. While the above mentioned sections were great, there are other parts of this book that were not stable. For example, he claims that the Ancient Chinese practice of ancestral worship is actually NOT worship or idolatry, but just paying respects. I have never heard this from any other historian and it is a known fact that ancestor worship is practiced today, especially amongst Chinese minority groups, and it is indeed worship. Some of his stretched historical interpretations made me question the book's validity.

I also was skeptical with Chan's interpretation of the Dao De Jing, the book from which Taoists base their beliefs., because he is not an expert nor is his interpretation like any other scholars who've studied the Dao De Jing.

I believe the Bible is Truth, so it is hard for me to suspend that belief while reviewing a book about God and truth in text. I was uncomfortable with Chan holding Dao text and Ancient Chinese text at the same truth level as the Bible, especially because Chan is a Christian and this book is unashamedly evangelical. Yes, all Truth is God's Truth and there may be some truth in other texts, but to hold it at the same level as the authority of the Bible is a dangerous step for a Christian. It seemed like another stretch of Chan's to convince Chinese readers that their ancestors were actually Bible-believers.

While I agree that there is compelling evidence that the Ancient Chinese had some biblical influence, I cannot fully grasp Chan's argument that the god they worshiped was the same exact God of the Old Testament. My personal opinion is that a more accurate conclusion would be that God preserved ideas about Himself in the Chinese culture, but their idea of God was not completely biblical.

Deeply Moving
By Gregory Simkins
I was deeply moved by reading Faith of Our Fathers: God in Ancient China by Chan Kei Thong. The book is both beautifully written and beautifully illustrated. This story is quite satisfying because it substantiates the view that the God who is worshipped by Christians is truly the God of all the earth and of all peoples and is not just a Western construct. Each chapter provides a new evidence that the God worshipped by the ancient Chinese is indeed the same God who sent his son Jesus Christ to be the Savior of all mankind. Each chapter concludes with the author's appeal to the reader to accept Jesus as his own personal savior. The author adds his own testimony that the evidence of which he writes moved him from a position to atheism to faith. I found that I was moved to handle this book with reverence as if it were the Bible itself. I recommend this book to all Christians and to all who would like to know God. This book tells not only the story of China, but of the Gospel itself.

A Fascinating Linkage
By J. Bullard
Faith of Our Fathers is an incisive, well researched document that needs to be read by every American who tends to think of the Chinese as "them" versus "us." While some of the early chapters were a tough read when they explained the meanings and interpretations of Chinese characters, any reader who has ever stood on the "emperor's disc" at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing can draw a comparison to the annual ritual in the Holy of Holies practiced once a year by the Jewish high priest.
Some of the author's conclusions were a bit of a stretch based on available evidence; yet, many of his conclusions are acceptable to the degree they support the beliefs of the individual reader.
For any thoughtful reader seeking one more bridge of commonality with the Chinese, Faith of Our Fathers is an excellent and thought-provoking read.
